It's important to recognize and celebrate the reality of Black excellence, which shines independently of any racial comparisons or stereotypes. I've seen firsthand how harmful phrases like "You act white" can diminish the achievements of Black individuals by wrongly associating intelligence with whiteness. This kind of thinking overlooks the rich history of Black scholars, leaders, and innovators who have contributed profoundly to society. In my experience, embracing the true meaning of Black excellence involves acknowledging that intelligence, creativity, and success are universal human traits, not confined to any one race. As more people of the Black community pursue education and leadership roles, it's crucial to dismantle the misconception that aligning with intellectual or cultural growth means distancing oneself from Black identity. Instead, it should be seen as an expression of empowerment and self-affirmation. Engaging with movements like #BlackHistoryReclaimed allows us to learn about the untold stories and achievements that form the foundation of Black greatness. These stories remind us that intelligence and excellence have deep roots in Black culture and history, far beyond any imposed racial narrative. By shifting the narrative in this way, we can foster pride, encourage personal growth, and inspire future generations to pursue knowledge and success unapologetically.
