My life right now
We slid down mountainsides, plunged into ice-cold lakes, wrestled with a dog, wondered who we really are on this planet, laughed while talking about our past, and laughed and stressed about what our future might hold, losing ourselves in all the possibilities.
That night, everything changed.
The forecast promised days of sunshine. Instead, the sky opened up. Rain came crashing down like a waterfall. As I scrambled to get into the tent, my zipper jammed. I stood there, completely soaked, fighting with it while the rain poured over me. My sleeping bag was drenched. I was drenched. I only had one shirt, and the bugs were so relentless that I didn’t want to rip the zipper open just to get inside.
Eventually, I got it open.
I crawled into the tent and spent the entire night soaking wet. By morning, a hot cup of coffee felt like the greatest luxury in the world.
We kept going.
We explored more hidden alpine lakes, dove into freezing water, and wandered farther into the mountains. That night we played card games until 1 a.m., sharing wine and dark chocolate beneath a sky full of stars.
Then the mountains reminded us we weren’t alone.
Sometime in the middle of the night, a large animal began circling the tent, running back and forth no more than 10 feet away. I climbed outside to make sure our food bags were still hanging safely in the tree.
That’s when I saw them.
Two giant yellow eyes staring straight at me.
Whatever it was refused to leave. The dog barked. I threw rocks. It barely reacted.
So we climbed back into the tent, poured another glass of wine, looked up through the trees at the stars, and sat there feeling two emotions at once.
Terrified.
And unbelievably alive.
The next day brought even more exploring, more hidden lakes, more freezing swims, and eventually the long journey back over the mountains.
Somewhere along the way, I realized something.
This isn’t just something I love doing.
This is how I want to live.
Forever.
Exploring the mountains offers a unique mixture of thrill and self-discovery that’s hard to find anywhere else. One thing I’ve learned from similar adventures is how unpredictability becomes part of the experience—from sudden heavy rains to wildlife encounters just outside your tent. These moments teach resilience and deepen your connection to nature. What stands out most in these journeys is the feeling of being incredibly alive despite—or because of—the challenges faced. Whether it’s the chill of diving into an icy alpine lake or the adrenaline rush when a wild animal circles nearby, every experience adds to a sense of freedom and presence. I remember a particular trip where a camping zipper jammed right as a storm broke, much like the story described here. That struggle against the elements in the pouring rain, feeling vulnerable yet determined, makes the eventual comfort of a warm drink so satisfying. Sharing late nights with friends, playing card games under the stars while sipping wine and eating chocolate, turns simple moments into lasting memories. These experiences highlight the joy of human connection amidst the solitude of the wilderness. Most importantly, time spent in the mountains fosters reflection on who we are and our place on this planet. It pushes us to contemplate our past, face uncertainties about the future, and find peace in the present. For those craving more than just a hobby, but a lifestyle that embraces raw nature and self-reliance, these adventures offer an inspiring path. They encourage living intentionally, appreciating life’s raw beauty, and welcoming the unknown with open arms. If you’re considering stepping into the wild, prepare for surprises and embrace every challenge. It’s not just about the destination, but about how these raw moments shape your spirit and bring you closer to living fully and authentically.
