Not Love Withdrawal

This is why some “obedient” kids are actually scared kids 💔 They apologise quickly, fix quickly, behave quickly, not because they fully understand yet, but because the room got cold and they want the old version of you back. That kind of discipline may look effective, but it can teach children that mistakes cost connection. Kids need correction, yes. But do they still feel loved while being corrected?

... Read moreFrom my experience as a parent and observer, I've noticed that when children quickly apologize or rush to correct their mistakes, it often isn't because they truly understand or feel remorse, but because they sense a loss of warmth and connection in the room. This response is a survival mechanism where the child attempts to restore the loving relationship by pleasing the parent, which can create a pattern of fear rather than learning. Many parents may unintentionally enforce this behavior by withdrawing affection or becoming colder after a child makes a mistake. The tone shifts, the environment feels less safe, and the child learns that mistakes lead to emotional disconnection. This can result in very obedient children who, on the surface, seem well-behaved but internally feel terrified of losing their parent's love. Through my journey and research, I found that children do need boundaries and correction, but these must come alongside clear messages that love and affection remain constant. Discipline should not be about controlling behavior through fear of losing connection but should focus on nurturing understanding and emotional security. Such an approach encourages kids to grow with confidence and resilience, knowing they are loved unconditionally even when they mess up. It's helpful to pause and reflect during moments of correction—ask yourself if your child feels the warmth and acceptance that assures them your love is unwavering. This emotional safety is crucial for healthy development and a secure childhood. By maintaining warmth even after mistakes, parents can foster a relationship built on trust and mutual respect, reducing fear and promoting genuine learning and growth. Ultimately, nurturing emotional safety during discipline helps children feel truly supported rather than scared, and it transforms obedience from a reaction of fear to an expression of understanding and love.
