Messy Stories Matter

The short answers in the teenage years may start way earlier than we think 😭 Sometimes kids stop talking because their little stories were interrupted too many times when they were younger. A confusing school story, a friendship drama, a random joke, or a long explanation may not sound important to us, but to them, it is connection. Give their words room now, so they still come back later 💛 #GentleParenting #FamilyConnection #TalkativeKids #OlderKids #ParentReminder

... Read moreFrom my experience as a parent, I've noticed that the small, messy stories my child shares—whether it's a funny incident at school, a confusing event with friends, or even a random joke—are actually vital windows into their world. When these stories get interrupted or dismissed, it seems like my child retreats, speaking less and becoming more reserved over time. I once underestimated the importance of these jumbled tales, thinking they were unimportant or tedious, but I came to realize they represent their way of making sense of experiences and fostering connection. Allowing children to tell these details, even if they jump from one part to another or get lost in side stories, helps them feel heard and builds trust. Creating a safe, attentive space where children know their 'messy' stories won’t be cut off encourages them to open up more fully later on. I've found that patience and active listening are key, especially as kids approach their teenage years, a time when communication naturally shifts but remains critical. This gentle approach aligns well with gentle parenting principles, emphasizing respect and emotional connection. Children need reassurance that their thoughts and feelings, even if expressed through long or disorganized stories, are valued. This foundation prevents the conversational walls that often come up during adolescence and encourages ongoing dialogue. In practice, I try to avoid rushing my child or finishing their sentences, and instead, show genuine curiosity and empathy. This not only helps with their confidence in sharing but also strengthens our family bonds. Watching how this patience affects their willingness to talk is rewarding and reminds me that every story, no matter how messy, matters deeply to their inner world.

Cancer survivors are just attention seekers?
Why do some of us keep talking about what we’ve been through? I used to think about this quite a bit and there were honestly (many) moments where I stopped myself from sharing more because I didn’t want people to think I was holding on to it or worse, that I was somehow using it. And I get it
