Don’t Dismiss The Feeling

When a child says something feels wrong, it may not be drama 😭 Some kids are very aware of small changes: who included them, who laughed at them, who suddenly became cold. If we keep saying “don’t think so much,” they may learn to ignore their own discomfort. We can teach strength without teaching them to tolerate hurt silently. #GentleGuidance #SchoolAgeKids #TrustTheirFeelings #ParentReminder #RaisingConfidentKids

... Read moreAs a parent or caregiver, I’ve learned that being attentive to a child's feelings, even when they seem 'too sensitive' about jokes or social dynamics, is crucial for their emotional well-being. Children often pick up on subtle signs such as tone changes, exclusion, or who laughs at them, which adults might overlook or dismiss as minor drama. However, these feelings are very real to the child and should be acknowledged rather than minimized. From personal experience, when a child expresses discomfort about a situation, responding with empathy rather than telling them to 'not think so much' helps build their trust and emotional awareness. It’s important to recognize that their reaction is not a sign of weakness but a natural response that deserves validation. By trusting their feelings, we empower kids to understand and manage their emotions healthily. One practical approach I found effective is to gently guide children by discussing why certain jokes or behaviors might hurt others, encouraging inclusion and kindness rather than silencing their concerns. Teaching strength doesn’t mean tolerating hurt silently; instead, it means helping children develop the confidence to express themselves and seek support when needed. In my journey, I’ve noticed that children who feel heard and supported grow into confident individuals, more capable of navigating social challenges. It’s a continuous process of learning to notice discomfort early and addressing it thoughtfully, allowing children to feel safe and understood. This mindset fosters resilience and emotional intelligence, which benefits children well beyond their school years. Ultimately, recognizing and respecting a child’s feelings—even when they seem sensitive—builds a foundation of trust and self-worth. This is something every parent and educator can strive to promote through gentle guidance and active listening.

Sensitivity isn’t weakness — it’s awareness. When parents dismiss feelings, children learn to hide them. But saying, “I can see that really bothered you — want to tell me why?” validates emotions and teaches regulation. At ADA, we help students understand feelings instead of suppressing them. 💛
