April is recognized as Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Awareness Month, a dedicated time to increase understanding and empathy for those affected. FND is a complex condition where patients experience neurological symptoms—such as seizures, movement disorders, or sensory issues—that are not explained by traditional neurological diseases. Learning about FND firsthand has been an eye-opening journey. Many people, including myself, face challenges in getting a clear diagnosis due to the overlapping symptoms with other neurological disorders. One of the key aspects of managing FND is education—both for sufferers and healthcare providers. There is still a stigma and misunderstanding around FND, often leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Sharing experiences on platforms like TikTok and other social media has created a valuable community, providing support and spreading awareness. From my personal experience, embracing this new diagnosis has been part of a learning ride. Educating myself about the condition’s nature has empowered me to communicate better with my medical team and seek appropriate therapies. Treatments often involve a multidisciplinary approach, including neurological, psychological, and physical therapy components to address both the symptoms and their underlying triggers. Awareness campaigns during April aim to highlight stories like mine, encouraging patients to share openly and helping healthcare professionals recognize and diagnose FND earlier.
