Things I swear by when my son is sick..

If you have a child, it's inevitable that at some point they will get sick. So here are the things that really help my little man when he's not feeling well.. (like today)

Also, because this is the internet.. you should know I'm a scrunchy mama. We use mostly clean and organic things but also vaccinations and modern medicine. These things are always done in conjunction with a visit to his pediatrician and any directions or meds we get from her also 😊 However your family handles sickness is fantastic for you, these are the things that work for us.

1. Genexa Medications

My whole family uses these OTC medications. Not only are they delicious and go down without a fight, but they WORK.

2. Vapor Bath+ Salts

I'll be honest, I'm not actually sure if this does anything but at the very least it calms my son and gets him in a cool bath for a little while when he has a fever. Also, it smells fantastic

3. Popsicles

They are delicious and cool down his body when he has a fever.

4. Pedialyte or Kinderlyte

Hydration.

5. Cuddles

My son is pretty clingy so on the days he's not well all he really wants is to snuggle the mama.. and truthfully I'm always looking for an excuse to snuggle my wild boy ♥️

How do you make your babies feel better?

2025/1/12 Edited to

... Read moreOh, the dreaded sick days with a little one! It’s tough on everyone, especially when they’re battling congestion or a nasty flu. Beyond the comforting items I already mentioned, I’ve found a few more tricks up my sleeve that really make a difference, especially when my toddler is struggling with coughs, chest congestion, or that stuffy nose that just won't quit. First, let's talk about those tricky respiratory woes, like toddler chest congestion and that restless cough. While a cool bath with vapor salts is great for soothing, nothing quite compares to the power of steam for really breaking up mucus. When my little guy is particularly congested, I often turn our bathroom into a mini-steam room. I’ll run a hot shower, close the door, and just sit with him in the steamy air for 10-15 minutes. We don’t get in the hot water, of course, but just breathing in that moist air really helps loosen things up. I make sure to have a book or a quiet toy to keep him occupied, and it’s amazing how much relief this simple method provides, especially before bedtime. It’s a classic home remedy, and for good reason – it truly helps with baby congestion relief. And for those continuous sniffles and coughs, a humidifier in his room is another absolute game-changer. Keeping the air moist helps prevent his airways from getting too dry and irritated, which can worsen coughing and congestion. I make sure to clean it regularly to avoid any mold buildup. Also, elevating his head slightly while he sleeps can make a world of difference for chest congestion. I just place a rolled-up towel under his crib mattress (never directly in the crib) to create a gentle incline. When it comes to flu medication for kids, it’s always a discussion with our pediatrician, but having choices like Genexa on hand makes me feel prepared. Beyond specific medications, I focus heavily on symptom management. If he’s got a fever, those cooling popsicles are not just a delicious treat, but also a stealthy way to keep him cool and hydrated. And speaking of hydration, while Pedialyte is a staple (pharmacists and pediatricians alike recommend it!), I also offer plenty of clear broths, watered-down juice, and just plain water throughout the day. Getting fluids in is paramount when they’re under the weather, especially with flu-like symptoms. Finally, the power of parental comfort cannot be overstated. Those cuddles, as I mentioned, are non-negotiable. But beyond that, creating a calm, quiet environment, reading extra stories, and simply being present makes them feel secure and loved. Sometimes, a gentle chest rub with a menthol-free vapor rub designed for babies can also provide additional comfort, but I always check with his doctor first. Every child is different, but these are the extra steps I take that consistently help my little man feel more comfortable and recover faster when sickness strikes.
