April Reads

I've been working more and it's been causing me to need to sleep more, so I've had less time to read than I'd like. Honestly I've been in a reading slump too. I don't have the attention span to invest in a book right now and I'm kinda sad about it. Hopefully I can start reading outside to get some sunshine and take the time to read too. It's been a mild spring this year which is unusual for where I live so it hasn't been as warm to stay outside in the sun. How many books did you read in April??

The Keeper of Hidden Books

Madeline Martin

A book inspired by the true story of the Underground Library in WW2 Warsaw. Zofia has found comfort in two things during times of hardship and that was books and her friend Janina. With the Nazi occupation in Warsaw, Zofia finds that the books need saving as well. Zofia jumps into action by salvaging what books she can and hides them away and starts a book club. As the destruction rages around them, Zofia must fight to save her friend and preserve her culture and community using the only weapon they have left-literature.

The Body in the Library

Agatha Christie

It's seven in the morning and the Bantry's wake up to find the body of a young woman in their library. She is wearing an evening dress and heavy makeup, which is now smeared across her cheeks. But who is she? How did she get there? And what is the connection with another dead girl whose charred remains are later discovered in an abandoned quarry? The respectable Bantry's invite Miss Marple into their home to investigate. Amid rumors of scandal, she baits a clever trap to catch the ruthless killer.

Every Heart A Doorway

Seanan McGuire

If you like fantasy worlds within the real world and Alice in Wonderland you'll enjoy this read. This book is about those who've been to such places and then return. What do you think happens? Well, they go to a school for weyward children. A place where they all understand the meaning of different worlds and the wish to return. Nancy is one of these girls. However, her arrival marks a change at the home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost.

5/4 Edited to

... Read moreAfter reading about these intriguing April book recommendations, I wanted to share some personal strategies that helped me overcome my own reading slumps. Like you, I often find that busy schedules and low energy can make it tough to focus on books. What worked for me was embracing shorter reading sessions—sometimes even just 10-15 minutes—and choosing books with engaging plots or emotional depth to maintain interest. For instance, historical fiction like 'The Keeper of Hidden Books' not only enriches understanding of real past events but also creates a deep emotional connection with characters like Zofia, inspiring me to keep turning the pages. Mysteries, such as Agatha Christie's 'The Body in the Library,' offer the perfect blend of suspense and intellectual challenge, which can be very motivating during a slump. Fantasy novels, like 'Every Heart A Doorway,' provide an escape to imaginative worlds. What fascinated me about this book was its exploration of belonging and identity, topics that resonate deeply and keep me hooked. I also found that reading outside on a sunny day—something you mentioned hoping to do—significantly boosted my mood and focus. Fresh air and natural light make reading feel like a cherished, refreshing activity rather than a chore. Lastly, joining book communities or clubs, such as the #lemon8bookclub mentioned, offers accountability and discussion, which helped me stay motivated and see books from new perspectives. Whether it's reflecting on the bravery of rescuing banned books in war-torn Warsaw or unraveling secrets with Miss Marple, engaging with others enriched my reading experience. If you’re experiencing a reading slump, consider these tips: choose emotionally compelling or suspenseful books, set modest daily reading goals, read outdoors if possible, and connect with fellow readers online or offline. This simple approach rekindled my passion for reading, and I hope it helps you too!
