Guardian Angels: Bullies or Protectors?
The infamous Curtis Silwa, created a wannabe #club , called the #guardianangels . Who claim to #protect vulnerable #newyorkers from assailants. Yet, they often bypass, #women , bipoc & Lgbt 🏳️🌈 folks when needed, and pick and choose who to harass and “safeguard.” They want to prove they are an alternative to the police, when you have a bunch of punk a$$ losers, who have nothing better to do than wear red berets and not actually stand up for the weak.
Having observed different community safety groups over time, I find that the Guardian Angels stir mixed feelings among New Yorkers. On one hand, their intention to safeguard neighborhoods is admirable and often fills gaps where law enforcement presence feels inadequate. Many local residents appreciate their visibility, especially in high-crime areas during night hours. However, their approach has raised legitimate concerns. Reports and personal anecdotes from diverse communities, including women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ individuals, suggest experiences where the group’s protection is inconsistently applied. This selectiveness can unintentionally perpetuate marginalization rather than promote inclusive safety. Community safety requires more than just street presence; it demands cultural sensitivity, accountability, and genuine engagement with all residents’ concerns. While the Guardian Angels aim to be an alternative to traditional policing, their effectiveness depends heavily on listening to and supporting those most at risk without bias. In my view, grassroots safety initiatives like these should collaborate closely with local leaders and advocacy groups to ensure protection is equitable. Without this, their well-meaning efforts might be perceived as harassing rather than helping, which undermines community trust. Ultimately, the need for protective organizations remains pressing, especially in crowded urban environments. But the lesson here is clear: true guardianship cannot be selective; it must be inclusive, consistent, and accountable to those it serves.
