FOLLOW THESE STEPS FOR A LONG LASTING GEL MANICURE
Everybody has experienced chipped or peeling gel polish. Once I started doing these steps, my manicures have GREAT retention and last for weeks until I have to remove them myself. Here is how to ensure the longevity of your gel manicure!
1- Cuticle prep with either cuticle remover, a cuticle pusher and nippers (optional) or the way I’ve recently been doing is with an electric file and different bits for a Russian style manicure aka a dry manicure. Removing buildup on the nail plate ensures better adhesion.
2- Dehydrate the nail plate with either alcohol or a dehydrator. I recommend 91% since it has less water content to ensure it dries quickly and there is no moisture on the nail.
3- Primer creates a tacky layer to ensure adhesion of the gel. I only apply a thin layer onto the free edge since that is where the nail is most prone to lifting. Note applying it to the whole nail might make removal later more difficult.
4- When applying your gel, don’t forget to cap the free edge for a protective layer against wear and tear by everyday tasks. I also recommend to apply the gel in thin layers and wipe off any excess gel on the skin before fully curing to prevent lifting as well as contact dermatitis.
5- Make sure to upkeep aftercare to ensure the healthy growth of your nails and extend time between manicures!

However, a huge caution: it’s incredibly easy to overfile your nails if you're not careful. If you feel any heat, stop. Your nails should feel smooth, not tender. After prep, dehydrating your nail plate is non-negotiable. Using 91% isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated dehydrator (like the one in my picture!) might seem small, but it strips away natural oils and lingering moisture that sabotages adhesion. It's like creating the perfect dry surface – gel needs that to bond properly. Don't skip it; ensure nails are completely dry before primer. Now, let's get into capping the free edge. This is a game-changer for preventing chips! When you apply base, color, and top coat, take a moment to 'cap' the very tip of your nail. This means running a thin line of gel across the free edge, essentially sealing the layers. It creates a protective barrier, preventing everyday bumps from lifting the gel at its most vulnerable point. Whether you're doing gel polish or building up gel nails, this technique seals everything securely. Without capping, you're practically inviting chips and peeling, especially in high-wear areas. Also, apply gel in thin layers to prevent 'build up gel nails' – too thick, and it won't cure properly, leading to lifting or a bulky look. Always wipe excess gel off your skin before curing for a clean finish. Finally, we cannot overlook aftercare, especially applying cuticle oil. This isn't just for looks; it's vital for nail health and extending your manicure's life. I apply cuticle oil every single day, sometimes twice! The oil keeps your cuticles soft and nourished, preventing hangnails. More importantly, it keeps your natural nails and the gel flexible. Dry nails are brittle, and brittle nails (and the gel on top) are more prone to cracking and chipping. My cuticle oil routine, as seen in a close-up, involves massaging it into my cuticles and around the entire nail plate. It truly makes a huge difference in longevity and appearance. Plus, healthy nails grow stronger, meaning more time between fills! By paying attention to these details – from gentle prep to mindful application and consistent aftercare – you’ll be amazed how long your gel manicures will last.
