The figure of $58 million in costs is staggering, yet what struck me most is how 90% of these costs are carried by taxpayers while victims bear profound emotional and physical harm. One critical issue that often gets overlooked is the effectiveness of police response. According to the report cited, 231 Calls to Justice reveal that many proposed police solutions are being ignored, which is discouraging for those who seek immediate help and lasting change. It highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure that law enforcement responds more effectively and empathetically to domestic violence cases. Preventing domestic violence before it starts should be a priority. This means investing in education, support services, and community programs that empower at-risk individuals and families. Prevention efforts can include workshops on healthy relationships, community awareness campaigns, and accessible resources for victims to find safe spaces. From my personal involvement with outreach initiatives, I’ve seen how early intervention and strong community support networks make a significant difference. Survivors often express that knowing someone believes them and that help is available can be life-changing. Investing in prevention not only reduces human suffering but also alleviates the economic burden that domestic violence imposes on Calgary. We, as a community, must advocate for policies that prioritize safety, support, and prevention to create a healthier, safer environment for everyone.
