Should I Give Her a Birthday Call🫠

I have not spoken to my mom in six years. She never reached out to me either. We just disappeared from each other’s lives after one big fight that never got fixed.

Today I woke up and saw the date. It is her birthday.

I made coffee like usual, but my hands felt strange holding my phone. I kept opening our old chat and closing it again. I typed “Happy Birthday” three times and deleted it three times. I feel cold and thinks six years of silence already said everything. But I also hesitate should I do something to change it… maybe?

I do not know if one short message can open old wounds or heal something small.

If you were me, would you send that message or keep the silence?

... Read moreReaching out to a parent after years of no contact, especially after a significant fight, is one of the most emotionally challenging decisions anyone can face. Birthdays, like the one mentioned in the story, naturally stir feelings and reflections on what could have been or what might still be possible. When someone hasn’t heard from their mom in six years, the hesitation to send a simple “Happy Birthday” message comes from a mixture of fear, vulnerability, and uncertainty. It’s important to remember that even a brief message can be a powerful step toward healing, or it might open old wounds that have yet to fully close. Sometimes, initiating contact on a significant day like a birthday can signal a willingness to reconcile without immediately diving into complex conversations. A short, kind note might be enough to plant a seed of renewed connection. On the other hand, it’s understandable to worry about potential rejection or reopening painful memories. If you find yourself in a similar situation, consider what you hope to achieve with the message. Is it to begin healing, to acknowledge your mom on her special day, or to bring closure? Understanding your own intentions can guide your approach. Additionally, think about setting boundaries for yourself—know that sending a message doesn’t obligate you to engage in full reconciliation immediately. It’s okay to take things slow and see how the other side responds. Remember, silence for six years is heavy, but small gestures of kindness can sometimes ease that weight. Whether you decide to send the message or wait for another day, what matters most is honoring your feelings and readiness. Sometimes healing starts with a mere word, and sometimes it takes more time. Whatever your choice, know you’re not alone in grappling with this dilemma.

Send her that text, there’s a reason deep inside that you want to text her. While I know nothing about that fight, I know she is still your mom. Send her a text, how and if she responds is her choice, but I know just a text can open many doors.
