GTPAL (sometimes written GPTPAL) is a way to quickly describe a pregnant client’s entire obstetric history in 5 letters.
• G = Gravida: total number of times pregnant, including the current pregnancy.
• T = Term: number of pregnancies that reached term (about 37 weeks or more).
• P = Preterm: number of pregnancies that ended preterm (about 20–36 weeks).
• A = Abortions: number of pregnancies that ended before viability (spontaneous or induced)
• L = Living: number of children currently living.
Nurses use GTPAL in charting and report to see patterns (like multiple preterm births or miscarriages) so they can plan safer, more individualized care for the mother and baby.
