Can salicylic acid be used daily?

The instructions on the bottle says that it can be used once daily but I've seen people here saying that it should not be used daily. What are your thoughts about this?

... Read moreHey everyone! I totally get the confusion around using salicylic acid daily. Like many of you, I’ve stared at my bottle of The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution for Blemish-Prone Skin, seeing the "use daily" instruction, but then reading online that it might be too much. It’s a common dilemma, and I want to share what I've learned from my own skincare journey and research. First off, let’s talk about how salicylic acid actually works. It’s a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid), which means it’s oil-soluble. This is its superpower! Unlike AHAs that work on the skin's surface, salicylic acid can penetrate deeper into your pores, dissolving excess oil and dead skin cells that cause breakouts. It’s fantastic for tackling blackheads, whiteheads, and generally improving skin texture, especially if you have blemish-prone skin. The 2% concentration in The Ordinary's solution is quite effective for this. Now, for the big question: can you use salicylic acid every day? The short answer is: it depends on your skin! For some, especially those with very oily, resilient skin, daily use of a 2% solution can be well-tolerated and provide consistent exfoliation, keeping pores clear and blemishes at bay. The instructions on many products often suggest daily use because, for many, it’s safe and effective. However, for a significant number of people, daily application can lead to over-exfoliation. I personally found that when I first started using it daily, my skin felt tight, looked a bit red, and even started breaking out more – a sign my skin barrier was compromised! This is because even though it's great at clearing pores, it's still an exfoliant. Overdoing it can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, increased sensitivity, and sometimes even more breakouts as your skin tries to compensate. My personal advice, especially if you're new to The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% or have sensitive skin, is to start slow. Try using it 2-3 times a week, perhaps in the evenings, and see how your skin reacts. If your skin tolerates it well after a few weeks, you can gradually increase frequency. Always listen to your skin! If you experience excessive dryness, redness, stinging, or peeling, scale back immediately. Here are a few tips I've picked up for incorporating it into your routine: Patch Test: Always do a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin. Moisturize: Follow up with a good, hydrating moisturizer to replenish your skin barrier. Sunscreen is NON-NEGOTIABLE: AHAs and BHAs can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily. Alternate with other actives: If you use other strong ingredients like retinoids or vitamin C, consider alternating days rather than layering them to prevent over-irritation. Pay attention to other products: Check if your cleansers or toners also contain exfoliants, as this could contribute to over-exfoliation. Ultimately, while your bottle of The Ordinary Salicylic Acid might say "daily," it’s more important to find what works best for your unique skin. It’s a fantastic ingredient, but like all powerful skincare, balance is key!
