Accessibility in fantasy and bookish spaces.

Accessibility in fantasy and bookish spaces? Here’s the perspective from a disabled cosplayer who attends these events in her wheelchair!

I’ve been asked before by people in the community how an event can be more inclusive and accessible, so I figured I would make a little text post that goes over some tips and suggestions! Keep in mind that accessibility doesn’t start and end at wheelchair users- there are tons of different ways an event can look after all of their guests! Obviously your event doesn’t need to include all of the suggestions made in this post, these are just some things for people to think about. ❤️

I absolutely love the fantasy and bookish community, there are so many incredible events and experiences to explore and attend. In 2025 let’s come together and work on making sure that our ENTIRE community has the same opportunity to experience the magic that these events bring. 🫶🏻

... Read moreAccessibility at fantasy and bookish events is crucial for creating inclusive experiences for all participants. It goes beyond just wheelchair access; it encompasses various needs for different types of disabilities. For instance, venues can enhance accessibility by providing ramps, spacious seating, and quiet areas for guests who may be overwhelmed by stimuli during the event. In addition to physical considerations, ensuring that information is readily available in accessible formats is key. Offering event schedules in large print or audio formats can greatly help those with visual impairments. For auditory accessibility, having sign language interpreters available during key programming can encourage participation from attendees who are deaf or hard of hearing. Furthermore, it is vital to consider dietary restrictions; providing clear information on menus and catering for common allergies can make dining experiences enjoyable for everyone. Pre-event accessibility guides published on websites can inform potential attendees about what accommodations are available, so they can prepare accordingly. Hosting training sessions for staff on how to assist and handle any accessibility concerns during the event is also beneficial. When all guests see that their needs are accounted for, they can engage fully in the shared magical experience. The ultimate goal is an event where everyone, regardless of their ability, can immerse in the fantasy world at these gatherings. Engaging in conversations and collecting feedback from the community can help organizers identify areas for improvement continuously.
