N5 Kanji!! ✨ 時

2024/12/9 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started learning Japanese, the concept of Kanji felt overwhelming, especially grasping multiple readings for a single character! But let me tell you, tackling essential Kanji like 時 (time/hour) head-on was one of the best decisions I made for my JLPT N5 journey. This kanji is everywhere, and understanding it truly unlocks so much of the language. The character 時 has two main readings: its On'yomi is じ (ji), and its Kun'yomi is とき (toki). I remember being so confused at first, thinking, 'Why two ways to read one kanji?!' But it’s all about context, and with practice, it becomes second nature. The OCR images in this post really helped me visualize the readings and how they fit into words. For example, when you see 時 used alone or in phrases like 'at the time of,' it often takes the とき (toki) reading. A great example I learned is 子供の時にたくさん遊びました (Kodomo no toki ni takusan asobimashita), which means 'When I was a child, I played a lot.' This really highlights the 'when' aspect of とき. Another common phrase is 時々 (tokidoki), meaning 'sometimes' – literally 'time time'! It’s a fun one to use. Now, for the じ (ji) reading, think 'o'clock' or 'hour.' This is where you'll use it with numbers to tell time. For instance, 三時 (sanji) means '3 o'clock.' It's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. You can apply this to almost any hour: 11時 (juuichi ji) for 11 o'clock, 5時 (go ji) for 5 o'clock, 18時 (juuhachi ji) for 6 PM. Even though the queries mentioned numbers like 67 or 30, remember that for telling time, we typically stick to 1-24 hours. For duration, it's a bit different, but for 'X o'clock,' 'じ' is your go-to. And speaking of clocks, the kanji 時 is also part of 時計 (tokei), which means 'clock' or 'watch,' combining 'time' with 'measure' (計). Many of you might be wondering about the stroke order for 時. I found that learning the correct stroke order isn't just about writing neatly; it genuinely helps me remember the kanji better. While I can't draw a diagram here, generally, you'll start with the left radical (日, sun), then move to the right radical (寺, temple). There are many fantastic online resources and apps that show animated stroke order diagrams, which I highly recommend checking out if you're serious about mastering it. The images in the original post actually break down the radicals! It really clicked for me when I saw 時 as a combination of 日 (sun/day) and 寺 (temple) – thinking of 'time' passing at a 'temple' under the 'sun' was a cool mnemonic! Beyond just telling time, 時 is a building block for many other concepts. For example, 時間 (jikan) means 'time' or 'duration,' and 時代 (jidai) means 'era' or 'period.' And if you're diving deeper into dates, you'll encounter other time-related kanji. Queries like 'youbi kanji' or 'doyoubi kanji' remind us of the days of the week, which often involve kanji for elements and numbers. For instance, 土曜日 (doyōbi) is Saturday, using the kanji for 'earth/soil.' Knowing 年 (nen/toshi) for 'year' and 今 (ima) for 'now' are also crucial for talking about time comprehensively. Mastering 時 was such a pivotal moment in my Japanese learning, especially for JLPT N5. It really made me feel more confident in reading and understanding everyday conversations. Keep practicing, and you'll soon be a pro at telling time and understanding contexts where 時 appears!
