Yelling felt like power. It was just pain with a microphone.

I used to think volume meant authority.

If I got loud enough, sharp enough, firm enough—

that counted as leadership.

It didn’t.

I wasn’t teaching respect.

I was teaching intensity.

Because when you grow up in loud,

you think loud is how things get handled.

And then one day—

your child flinches.

And you recognize the look.

The look you used to have.

That’ll sober you faster than anything.

Turns out strength is quieter than I thought.

Sometimes the most powerful thing I can do

is lower my voice.

... Read moreIn my experience, shifting from a loud, authoritative approach to a quieter, more mindful way of leading and communicating has been incredibly liberating and healing. Like many, I once believed that raising my voice was a sign of strength and control, especially in challenging moments. But over time, I realized that yelling doesn't solve problems; it often perpetuates anxiety and unresolved trauma. One key insight is how quickly our past experiences influence our tone and reactions. When stressed or overwhelmed, we might unconsciously revert to patterns learned in childhood, including using volume as a defense mechanism. Understanding this helps us respond with more compassion and self-awareness. Instead of reacting with intensity, I began practicing lowering my voice intentionally, even during conflict. This quiet strength invites calmer interactions and models emotional regulation, which is especially impactful when parenting. Children pick up on tone and energy, so showing composure can help break cycles of generational trauma and teach healthier ways to handle stress. Healing is not only about what we say but also how we say it. It involves patience, forgiveness—both for ourselves and others—and the willingness to sit with discomfort rather than escalate it. In moments when I felt like I was “defending my life,” choosing gentleness over shouting created space for empathy and understanding. From a spiritual perspective, this aligns with principles like those in James 1:19: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." This wisdom encourages slowing down our emotional reactions to make wiser choices in communication. Ultimately, true leadership and growth come from inner work—acknowledging our imperfections, apologizing when needed, and repairing relationships. By lowering my voice, I not only reduce harm but also embody a more powerful and respectful influence, proving that strength doesn’t have to be loud to be effective.

The first slide introduces the topic: 'Yelling at Kids Works — But at a Cost,' promising the honest truth about its short-term and long-term effects, based on science, with a 'SAVE THIS POST!' call to action.
The second slide explains 'WHY IT WORKS,' stating that yelling triggers a child's threat response, leading to compliance. This immediate result is a powerful reward, teaching the brain 'yelling = compliance,' making it hard to stop.
The third slide details 'THE REAL COSTS' of yelling in the long run: it erodes relationships, raises the threshold for compliance, keeps children's nervous systems on alert, and models yelling as a tool.
Yelling works — but here’s what it costs 🗣️
Can I say the thing nobody wants to say out loud? Yelling works. That’s why we do it. The kids stop. They comply. And our brain registers: that worked. So the next time we’re maxed out and nothing else is landing, our brain goes right back there. But here’s what it’s costing over time. And i
