The true definition of sin ⤵️
We throw the word sin around a lot—like it’s just bad stuff we do. But sin runs way deeper than breaking rules. It’s when we look at God, the One who gave us breath, and say, “Nah, I got this.”
That’s what John Piper meant when he said, “Sin is the glory of God not honored.” Every time we choose our own way over His, we’re saying God isn’t worth listening to. That His glory isn’t enough.
It’s like stealing credit for something you didn’t do. God gives you life, strength, gifts—and you use them to chase stuff that pulls you further from Him. You use the breath He gave you to curse His name. You use the hands He made to do harm. That’s what sin is—it’s saying my glory over His.
And the worst part? It doesn’t even satisfy. You chase the high, the attention, the rush—but it fades fast. You’re left empty again. That’s because sin always promises life and pays in death.
Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We’ve all stolen His glory at some point. But here’s the good news: Jesus came to give it back.
Jesus lived the perfect life—one that actually honored God in everything—and then took the hit for all the times we didn’t. He took the shame, the guilt, the punishment. On that cross, He traded His glory for our mess, so that when we come to Him, God sees His perfection, not our rebellion.
You don’t have to keep living for your own glory. That weight will crush you. You were made to reflect His. And when you start doing that—when your life points back to Jesus—you find peace that no drug, no relationship, no success can touch.
