The depression diaries #4 (Solo adventures in DC)

So recently I decided to go to a concert on my own...which for me is soooooo out of my comfort zone it's not even funny. It was on impulse too.

It all started last Thursday when I saw that the group "The two lips," were coming to a city near me. I first got into indie music a couple months ago, and have since been listening to it. Which is different for me because I went through a whole punk rock phase when I was in hs. Now as an adult, I guess indie rock & pop are it for me.

I would have gone with friends but I don't have any. So....solo trip it was! I went after work and got there early because idk...why not? However going early benefitted me so much, at least I'd later find that out. I got there by train and after successfully figuring it out on my own, took an Uber to the venue. I was not expecting to see lights. When I got to the restaurants before the venue I was greeted by these beautiful Christmas lights that were pretty much everywhere. Then I saw these boats and beautiful water that surrounded it. It honestly was breathtaking. I took so many pictures that people probably thought I was a tourist, even though I wasn't.

Because I made it early and it was so cold, the small group of us that made it early got let in by the venues employees. They let us sit at the upper bar and I sat at a small table by myself until a very cute girl came and stood near me. I remember being so nervous to talk to her. I was tempted to order a drink but seeing as I was alone in a city I'm not super familiar with, I backed out. She kept glancing over at me but I kept pretending to look at my phone. I wasn't sure if she was also nervous, but I figured she was as she looked younger than me. I guess it's an assumption of mine that some girls from this generation are shy and more quiet. But then again, here I am being the same way at almost 30.

She had ordered food and that's when she had worked up the nerve to ask if she could sit with me. Once she spoke that was all I needed to break down my barriers a bit. I actually struck a conversation with her, even though I knew I wasn't good at keeping the convo going.

We started talking about where we were both from, what jobs/schools we went to. What states we both lived in. The typical small talk. For me, it felt nerve wrecking because I recently came to the realization that I'm a closeted bi-sexual. So I didn't want her to think I was trying to be creepy and flirt with her. I honestly just wanted to find someone to talk to at the show, so I wouldn't be alone. Pathetic of me, I know.

Without really talking about it, we decided to stick by each other and watched the show together. Talking in between the sets. It was really exciting to be able to talk music with someone as the small group of people I consider "friends," don't have a passion for it like I do. After the show, we stuck around and met Niko Rubio (The opener) who hugged me. I should have taken a picture with her but I honestly was so starstrucked & developed a small crush on her. What can I say? she's beautiful and can shred on guitar? She's a dream that's for sure.

After that, we walked out the venue together and I wanted to be sure she made it to her stepmothers car safely. We said goodbye and that was it. Getting home took forever for me, more trains & ubers. By the time I made it home, I was exhausted but had so much fun that it was worth it!

So, I encourage you guys to do the same. If you don't have friends but want to do something fun, go anyways (Just be safe about it, please!). That's my disclaimer for you guys!

Also, thanks Rosie. You'll probably never find this post, but if it does make it your way. You were super sweet to talk to!

... Read moreAttending a concert alone can be a daunting yet rewarding experience, especially when stepping out of your comfort zone. Solo adventures like the one in Washington DC not only allow you to immerse yourself fully in the music but also encourage personal growth and new social interactions. Discovering indie bands such as The Two Lips after a journey through punk rock highlights the evolution of musical taste, reflecting maturity and changing interests. Navigating public transport like trains and rideshares in a new city builds confidence and independence. Experiencing the festive atmosphere with Christmas lights and scenic waterfronts before the concert adds to the charm of solo trips. Early arrival can provide unique benefits like quieter settings, opportunities to meet other attendees, and even gaining special access or seating at the venue. Engaging with strangers, such as the shy girl who approached, can lead to meaningful conversations and shared passions, helping to overcome social anxiety over time. It’s encouraging to see how music serves as a common ground to connect even when one's close friends might not share the same enthusiasm. The interaction with emerging artists like Niko Rubio and the thrill of meeting them in person emphasizes the special moments solo concert-goers can enjoy. Though transportation after late events might be tiring, the satisfaction and joy from these experiences are worth it. This story also underscores the importance of safety precautions during solo outings, especially at night or in unfamiliar cities. Finally, this narrative inspires others to seize opportunities for solo adventures, whether it’s attending concerts, exploring new cities, or simply trying something new. Everyone deserves moments of joy and connection, even if it means stepping into the unknown alone. Such experiences can foster self-confidence, memories, and even unexpected friendships that enrich life’s journey.

One thing I wish people understood about depression is that it doesn’t always look the same for everyone. These last few months have been tough for me—losing my work contracts, adjusting to being a full-time stay-at-home mom, and trying to balance it all. Some days I show up smiling, but inside, I’
