Before You Assume Your Life Is Falling Apart… Check These 8 Things First

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned:

Not every problem is a life problem.

Sometimes it’s a sleep problem.

Sometimes it’s a stress problem.

Sometimes it’s a hunger problem.

Sometimes it’s a perspective problem.

Before making a major decision, try this:

• If you hate everyone, eat something.

• If you hate yourself, take a shower.

• If you’re anxious about the future, focus on today.

• If you think everyone hates you, get some sleep.

• If you’re overwhelmed, write your thoughts down.

• If you’re stuck in the past, make a plan for the future.

• If you’re restless, go for a walk.

• If you feel like giving up, remember a time you succeeded.

I’ve made some of my worst decisions when I was exhausted, stressed, hungry, or overwhelmed.

Take care of your mind by taking care of the basics first.

What’s one simple habit that always helps reset your mindset?

... Read moreIn my own experience, I've noticed that when life feels like it's spiraling out of control, it's often not because everything is truly falling apart, but rather because some of the fundamental needs of the mind and body are unmet. The advice to check if you’re hungry, sleepy, or stressed before making major decisions resonates deeply with me. For instance, when I’m feeling irritable or negative toward others, I pause to eat something nourishing—it’s surprising how much a stable blood sugar level changes my mood and outlook. Similarly, simple acts like taking a shower or going for a walk help refresh my mindset. There was a time when anxiety about the future overwhelmed me; focusing on the present moment calmed my racing thoughts and allowed me to make clearer decisions. Writing down my worries or plans also proved invaluable during overwhelming periods, as it externalizes the chaos and provides a sense of control. Another important lesson I learned is the power of reminding myself of past successes whenever I feel like giving up. This strategy shifts my perspective from defeat to resilience, motivating me to keep moving forward. These strategies align with psychological principles emphasizing mindfulness, self-care, and cognitive reframing. Ultimately, taking care of these basic physical and psychological needs lays the foundation for better mental health and decision-making. Instead of rushing into reactions during stress or fatigue, pausing to check these eight areas can prevent regrettable choices. This approach has helped me and many others maintain a balanced mindset, turning difficult moments into opportunities for growth and renewal.
