It Wasn’t One Big Thing It Was All the Small One
People always recognize the trauma response… but they don’t always remember the trauma.
And that’s the part that makes healing so confusing.
Because sometimes it wasn’t a single big moment.
It wasn’t a clear “this is when everything changed.”
It was slow.
It was subtle.
It was years of being told to calm down, be good, be useful.
It was learning that expressing pain made people uncomfortable.
That needing too much made you hard to love.
That the safest thing to do was shrink — emotionally, energetically, even physically.
You don’t always remember the exact wound.
But your body does.
Your nervous system does.
Your patterns do.
That’s why healing can feel like grief for something you don’t have the words for.
Because you’re not just recovering from what happened —
You’re recovering from who you had to become just to survive it.
But here’s the hope:
You don’t need to fully remember it to begin healing.
You just need to notice the response.
The reflex.
The shutdown.
The overworking.
The over-explaining.
The fear of being “too much.”
That noticing? That’s the beginning of freedom.
That’s you saying, “This isn’t who I am. This is who I had to be.”
📚 If this speaks to you, The Body Keeps the Score and What Happened to You? are two books that changed the way I saw my own story — and started rewriting it.
💬 You’re not broken. You’re remembering yourself
