Carpet Amber Rose — a small joy in the corner🌺
Carpet Amber Rose is one of those roses that almost no one talks about.
I first noticed her by chance at Sheridan Nursery, back when I was just learning how to grow roses. At that time, I wasn’t confident with large, dramatic blooms, and a gardening friend once told me: small-flowered roses are often easier to love.
And she truly is.
This is a very low-maintenance rose. She stays compact, rarely growing taller than about 1 meter, and here in Toronto she survives even harsh winters with no protection at all. She blooms generously, producing clusters of small flowers rather than single statement blooms.
What I love most is her changing color.
She opens in soft pink, then gradually shifts through coral, orange, and finally a warm amber yellow. The color transition feels natural and gentle, almost like watching the seasons pass on one plant.
Her weakness is also typical of small roses — the flowers don’t last long. Wind and rain can scatter the petals easily, leaving a carpet of color on the ground. But somehow, that impermanence feels fitting.
Not every rose in a garden needs to be famous or dramatic.
If you enjoy small roses, low maintenance plants, or are considering growing roses in pots, Carpet Amber Rose is a lovely and forgiving choice — quiet, reliable, and surprisingly charming.
