Creating original characters, especially for a universe as vibrant as Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is one of my favorite things to do! I've had a lot of questions about how I come up with my OCs, so I wanted to share a bit about my process, especially for Akuma Oni. When I started brainstorming for a new ROTTMNT OC, I knew I wanted something visually striking and connected to a rich mythology. The idea of an 'Akuma Oni' immediately came to mind. Oni are incredible figures in Japanese folklore, known for their strength and sometimes fearsome appearance, often with horns and unique skin colors. I thought, 'How cool would it be to fuse that with the energetic, often humorous, yet action-packed world of ROTTMNT?' This blend allowed me to explore unique powers and a compelling backstory that fits right into the mutant New York. For Akuma Oni's design, I really focused on making her memorable. You'll notice her dark grey skin tone and those prominent red horns – these were deliberate choices to evoke her Oni heritage while still making her feel distinct. I imagined her with long black hair that has a wild, untamed feel, hinting at her powerful nature. And those glowing yellow eyes? They're meant to convey both her mystical energy and a hint of determination, maybe even a bit of mischief, which totally fits the ROTTMNT vibe! Thinking about her attire, I went for a practical yet symbolic look. A brown tunic and shorts felt right for someone who's agile and ready for action in the city, but I wanted to add something iconic. Her white and red mask isn't just for show; it holds a bit of her story too, perhaps a symbol of her clan or a protective charm. And of course, the red hammer – it's not just a formidable weapon but also a visual callback to traditional Oni weaponry, reimagined for a modern mutant. I spent a lot of time sketching different versions of her full body, face, and side profile views to ensure every detail felt right. If you're thinking about creating your own ROTTMNT OC, especially an Oni-inspired one, here are a few tips from my journey: Find Your Core Concept: What kind of mutant or being do you want them to be? Don't be afraid to mix and match inspirations! Think about what kind of powers or personality would be fun to explore. Visual Storytelling: Every design choice tells a story. Why do they have dark skin or red horns? What do their eyes convey? Even their clothing can hint at their background or abilities. Don't just draw; think about the 'why.' Fit the Universe, But Make It Your Own: ROTTMNT is all about unique mutants and their adventures. Think about how your character would interact with the existing cast. Are they a mutant human, an ancient spirit, or something else entirely? Experiment with Design Sheets: Like the one I shared, creating a character design sheet with different views (full body, face, side profiles) really helps solidify their look and ensures consistency. It's like building a blueprint for your character's art. Don't Be Afraid to Revise: My OCs often go through several iterations before I settle on a final design. It’s part of the fun!
