LOC’D journey

I started my locs in January 2021, I am 3 years loc’d and loving it. My tips if you want thicker locs would be not to get re-twist too often, every 2 to 3 months. Wear a satin lined bonnet every night to bed to prevent fizz or something like that lol. Wet hair every two days and moisturize with oil such as caster oil, , olive oil , etc. Happy loc’inggg ❣️ also, can you subscribe to my YouTube pleaseee @Njmay #youtubechannel

... Read moreReaching the two-year mark in a loc journey is such a significant milestone, and I remember feeling so proud when I hit mine! While I’m now celebrating three years loc’d, that second year was truly when my locs started to transform and show off their true potential. For anyone wondering what to expect or how to care for their locs around the 2-year mark, here’s a deeper dive into what worked for me. Around the two-year point, my locs really began to mature and gain density. You know how 4c hair shrinks so much, especially in its natural form? Well, seeing my locs stretch and gain length beyond that initial shrinkage was incredibly rewarding. It felt like they finally settled into their form, and I started noticing them passing my shoulders a little bit, just as they do now. This stage is often called the ‘teen’ phase of locs, where they can look a bit unruly, but it's also a time of significant growth and strengthening. My core tips for maintaining locs became even more crucial during this period. I stuck diligently to only getting re-twists every 2 to 3 months. Over-manipulation can really hinder thickness and lead to thinning, which is the last thing you want after putting in so much work. Letting them breathe and allowing some new growth to accumulate before a re-twist was key for encouraging that beautiful, thick foundation. Moisture was, and still is, paramount. I continued to wet my hair every two days and thoroughly moisturized with a blend of natural oils. Castor oil and olive oil were my go-to’s, not just for sheen but for deep nourishment to the scalp and loc strands. I also started incorporating a light leave-in conditioner spray on damp hair before sealing with oil – this really helped lock in the hydration, especially as my locs got longer and absorbed more moisture. Protecting my locs at night was absolutely non-negotiable. That satin lined bonnet became my best friend, preventing frizz, lint, and breakage. I even started using a satin pillowcase on nights I felt like my bonnet might slip off (just in case!). This simple step truly makes a difference in maintaining the neatness and health of your locs, saving you from daily battles with frizzy roots and ends. Keeping them covered also helped to preserve the moisture from my daily routine. For washing, around the two-year mark, I often opted for a clarifying shampoo once a month to prevent build-up, followed by a deeply moisturizing conditioner. Ensuring all product was rinsed out thoroughly was vital to keep my locs clean and light. Sometimes, I’d even do a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse every few months to really deep clean and remove any residue without stripping my hair completely. This prevented that dull, heavy feeling some people experience with mature locs. Embracing the journey and having patience is probably the biggest tip of all. Your locs are unique, and every stage brings new lessons and beauty. Even at two years, there might be days you love them and days you question them, but trust the process. These tips helped me reach my 3-year loc-iversary with strong, healthy, and thriving locs, and I hope they guide you on your own amazing journey!
