My Daughter’s Homework Low-Key Shocked Me
My daughter’s teacher assigned her an Argumentative Essay this week. The students had to pick one topic out of 38, and she chose: “Limiting Homework.” Honestly? That choice alone tells me how overwhelmed she already feels 😅
Then I looked at the rest of the topic list — climate change, fast fashion, AI regulation, misinformation on social media, digital literacy, screen time, ethical responsibilities of influencers… I had to stop and reread it twice. Half of these are things adults argue about on the internet every day.
She’s only in 7th grade. I’m torn between thinking, “This is amazing critical thinking training,” and “Is this way too much pressure for a 12-year-old?”I wonder if school is moving faster than kids’ emotional capacity.
What do you think … is this kind of assignment empowering, or too advanced for middle school?

when I was in the 7th grade I had to write about the war in Iraq. we were give pro and con and you had to write an argumentative paper with your stance. these are all issues that 7th graders deal with, idk you don't want then writing about it. it doesn't matter what adults argue about it only matters what your daughter thinks.
