Should stay-at-home spouses do EVERYTHING?

My husband works full-time. I stay home with our kids. Recently he started saying things like, “I work all day. You should handle the house.”

The house, the kids, cooking, dishes, laundry, school drop-off, grocery shopping, meal planning, cleaning, bedtime, EVERYTHING???

Yesterday he came home to unfolded laundry and said, “What exactly did you do today?”

I listed:

– Two loads of laundry

– Packed lunches

– Cleaned the bathroom

– Helped with homework

– Paid bills

– Cooked

– Took our toddler to the doctor

– Didn’t get a break for even two minutes

He shrugged and said, “Still looks messy.”

I told him if he wants the house spotless, he can help. He told me I’m “spoiled” and “entitled.”

Would you stay or start packing? Moms, have you ever met similar struggles?

... Read moreMany stay-at-home spouses experience similar struggles as described, feeling undervalued despite managing numerous daily responsibilities. Household tasks such as cooking, laundry, cleaning, childcare including school drop-offs and doctor visits, meal planning, and even managing finances are full-time efforts that require constant attention. It’s important to recognize that these efforts are work, even if they don’t come with a pay stub. The stereotype that stay-at-home spouses should do EVERYTHING in the home because the other partner is working outside the home fails to appreciate the emotional and physical labor involved. Communication about workload and expectations is critical in a healthy relationship. When one partner views household management as less important or assumes it's the other partner’s sole responsibility, tension and resentment can build. The phrase your husband said, “I work all day. You should handle the house,” reflects a common but harmful mindset that undervalues unpaid domestic labor. Studies and discussions among family therapists emphasize the need for shared responsibility at home to foster respect and partnership. If one partner is unhappy or overwhelmed, collaborative solutions such as dividing tasks or hiring help if possible can prevent burnout. Also, recognition and verbal appreciation for the invisible and often thankless tasks can improve marital satisfaction. The question "Should stay-at-home spouses do EVERYTHING?" invites deep reflection on fairness and equality in the household. For moms and stay-at-home spouses feeling these pressures, support groups, online forums, and conversations with others who face similar challenges can provide encouragement and coping strategies. Remember, self-care and setting boundaries matter. It’s okay to expect help and to negotiate roles that suit your family’s unique situation. Balancing work and home life isn’t just about physical tasks; it's about emotional support and mutual respect to ensure all family members thrive.

Honestly I only want two kids so hopefully kids won’t be to bad and as long as he comes home without another woman’s sent on him and I get to sleep next to him I’m okay with cooking and cleaning and kids and everything.
