How Is This Wrong?! 💀
From my own observations and experiences with cultural representation in media, it’s clear that authentic casting and cultural respect are crucial, especially in projects that highlight a specific heritage. The Ghost of Tsushima controversy highlights how important it is for companies to choose performers who not only understand but live the culture they portray. When Sony opted not to hire a Japanese performer to wear traditional Japanese wardrobe for a Japanese game, it understandably caused backlash. Authentic representation ensures the traditions, clothing, and cultural artifacts are portrayed with accuracy and honor. Furthermore, the involvement of recognized masters—such as the Japanese musician mentioned who is officially acknowledged for traditional flute skills—adds significant cultural depth and authenticity to the project. This enriches the user’s experience and fosters cultural appreciation rather than appropriation. This experience taught me that cross-cultural sensitivity is not just about avoiding offense but about celebrating and preserving the culture respectfully. When creators involve authentic voices and talents from the relevant culture, it builds trust and respect with audiences, especially those communities directly connected to the cultural identity portrayed. In the gaming and entertainment industries, we’re seeing a growing awareness of this issue, with fans and consumers demanding more inclusive and respectful representation. It’s a collective call for companies like Sony to listen to their audience and prioritize cultural authenticity to avoid alienating or offending dedicated fans and minority communities.
