Horse abuse case solved on March 5, 2026!
On March 5, 2026, State Police of Brunswick arrested Edward J. Madlin, 35,of Mechanicville, NY for twelve class "A" misdemeanor counts of "Overdriving, Torturing anf Injuring Animals: Failure to provide proper Sustenance."
The arrest relates to the 11 Standardbreds allegedly owned by Madlin, who had to be rescued from "unimaginable neglect" on a New York property in late 2025.
Four stallions were living in stalls inside the barn, standing atop mounds of old hay and manure measuring as much as five feet high. Rescuers estimated the stallions hadn't left their stalls or received standard medical care, such as Farrier and dental care, for multiple years.
Five other Standardbred mares were living outside in a pasture alongside a paint mare and a cow, while a sixth Standardbred mare was separated in a lone paddock with no shelter. The horses also had overgrown hooves and limited access to medical care; more than one had a poor body condition score. Access to water was limited as well, according to volunteers who gave first-hand account of the scene.
Having followed similar cases of animal neglect and rescue, I can attest to the emotional toll such situations take on both the animals and the rescuers. The Madlin case highlights critical issues often overlooked by owners, such as the importance of regular farrier and dental care for horses. Negligence of these basic needs can lead to severe pain and disability.
