Why I prefer ANCC cert as a nurse practitioner

To be honest, I’m not sure why there has to be 2 certifying bodies to become a nurse practitioner. If you’re in NP school, you probably have heard that you can either choose to take your boards with the ANCC or AANP, and maybe you feel confused about what the difference is and what’s best to choose.

As a family nurse practitioner that’s worked both in the clinical AND non-clinical setting, here’s my tip.

To take it back a step, let’s talk about the differences in the actual test.

ANCC Exam- 175 questions, uses a variety of questions formats (multiple choice, drag drop etc), and pass rates sit at about 85%. The questions are not just clinical though- it incorporates research, theory, policy and professional role as well. It’s available for pretty much every speciality.

AANP Exam- 150 questions, multiple choice, 73% pass rate, questions are clinical scenarios and patient diagnosis /treatment plan.

I think form the test alone, it’s pretty apparent that the organizations have different focuses. ANCC takes the NP role as a really broad career that can involve research, education and non-clinical facing options. AANP, in my opinion, is more restrictive.

If you see yourself ever pursuing a job as a nurse practitioner that’s not clinical facing, I would suggest going for ANCC. I did my ANCC and now that I’ve moved on to the non-clinical world I’m so glad I did. To renew your certification every 5 years, you don’t need to have clinical practice hours in order to renew your certification. You can substitute it with other projects like research, a bunch of CME, or publication etc.

ANCC feels like a win-win to me!

if you’re an NP student or NP, which one are you taking or did you take?

... Read moreChoosing between the ANCC and AANP certification exams is a pivotal moment for any aspiring Nurse Practitioner. While the original article touched on the exam differences and my personal preference, let’s dive deeper into what these distinctions truly mean for your career trajectory and how to navigate the practicalities of certification. From my perspective, the ANCC exam's broader scope, encompassing research, theory, policy, and professional role, isn't just about making the test harder; it's about preparing NPs for a wider array of leadership and specialized positions. When I think about my journey, even having studied at institutions like Columbia University School of Nursing, the academic rigor and focus on holistic professional development that ANCC promotes felt much more aligned with a future that might extend beyond direct patient care. This comprehensive approach is particularly beneficial if you envision roles in education, administration, public health, or even emerging fields that require a strong theoretical foundation, not just clinical expertise. Queries like 'ancc informatics nursing certification' or 'ancc med surg certification' highlight this versatility – ANCC offers specialized certifications that cater to these diverse interests, underscoring its commitment to a broad professional identity. In contrast, the AANP's strong focus on clinical scenarios and patient diagnosis/treatment plans makes it an excellent choice for those whose career path is firmly rooted in direct patient care. If your passion is solely clinical practice and you don't foresee venturing into academic, research, or policy roles, then the AANP might feel more direct. However, it's crucial to consider the long-term implications, especially regarding renewal. One of the most significant advantages of ANCC, which truly sealed the deal for me, is the flexibility in certification renewal. Unlike AANP, which typically requires a certain number of clinical practice hours, ANCC allows you to renew through various professional development activities. This includes continuing medical education (CME) – which is standard for almost all healthcare professionals – but also involvement in research (like understanding 'Known Proto-Oncogenes And Tumor-Suppressor Genes' for an oncology NP, for example), publications, presentations, precepting students, or even participating in professional organizations. This is incredibly liberating if, like me, you find yourself transitioning into non-clinical roles. It means your hard-earned certification remains valid without the pressure to maintain direct patient contact hours, offering unparalleled career flexibility. Navigating the certification application process itself can also feel daunting. After completing your program, receiving your 'Authorization to Test' is a big step. Both ANCC and AANP have detailed application procedures on their websites, covering everything from eligibility criteria to scheduling your exam. My advice is to start reviewing the application requirements early in your final semester to avoid any last-minute surprises. Ensure all your transcripts are sent, and your program director has submitted the necessary verification. Once certified, understanding 'how to display nurse practitioner credentials' is straightforward. For ANCC, you'll typically use ANCC board-certified (e.g., FNP-BC), while for AANP, it's AANP certified (e.g., FNP-C). These credentials signify your expertise and commitment to your profession. Ultimately, the choice between ANCC and AANP is deeply personal, reflecting your career aspirations and values. For me, ANCC offered the robust foundation and the professional freedom I needed to explore diverse opportunities within the nursing profession, whether clinical or non-clinical. I hope sharing these deeper insights helps you make the best decision for your unique NP journey!

I was thinking about taking the AANP just to be honest it seems easier, what did you use to study for the AANC?
