Career change at 30: quitting nursing for biotech

Never in a million years would I have thought that my career path would have been from bedside nurse to biotech nurse practitioner.

My goal, from the beginning of nursing school, was to become a nurse practitioner in oncology. But when I achieved that dream and felt burned out without flexibility in my schedule or ability to grow my career, I started to look elsewhere.

Coincidentally the pandemic hit and I left my job to raise my first baby at that time which was not what I had planned for myself but it hind sight it gave me time to gain clarity and redirected my career path.

I became really interested in the world of biotech and pharma and started to do some research on what kinds of roles I could fit into. I poured my time into applying to these roles that I thought I could fit into, individualizing my resumes and cover letter for each one, and then getting hit with tons of rejections. I finally got a call back and that was the only call I needed. I quickly progressed through the interviews and was given an offer within 2 weeks!

If you’re feeling discouraged or burned out like I did, just know you’re not alone! I literally felt the same way and this one job changed the trajectory of my career. This is why I share my story, and break down the ins and outs of these career options here. The first step is to learn your options and the next is to never settle!

If you’ve never heard or biotech and pharma jobs for nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, I’m an open book! What questions do you all have?

... Read moreSo many of you have reached out asking, "How exactly did you make the jump from bedside nursing to biotech?" It's a huge step, and I totally get why you'd be curious. After feeling the intense burnout of the traditional nursing path, even after achieving my goal of becoming an NP, I knew I needed a change. This wasn't just about a job; it was about reclaiming my passion and finding a career that offered growth and flexibility. First, let's talk about what a 'biotech nurse' or 'biotech NP' actually *does*. It's a diverse field, so roles can vary widely. You might find yourself in clinical research, medical affairs, regulatory affairs, or even commercial roles. Unlike direct patient care, these positions often leverage your clinical expertise in a different way – you're translating medical knowledge, coordinating studies, educating professionals, or ensuring compliance. Your background as a nurse, especially if you're an NP from a reputable program like the Columbia University School of Nursing, gives you an invaluable perspective that is highly sought after in the biotech and pharma world. Understanding Your Transferable Skills: Don't underestimate the skills you've honed as a nurse. We're critical thinkers, problem-solvers, meticulous with documentation, excellent communicators, and natural educators. These are precisely the qualities biotech companies look for! Think about your experience coordinating care, managing complex patient cases, educating families, or even navigating hospital systems. These are all forms of project management, communication, and data interpretation. Navigating the Application Process: This was the toughest part for me, and I faced many rejections. The key? Tailoring your resume and cover letter completely. Forget the standard nursing resume. Highlight your research experience (even if it was just during your NP program), your ability to interpret lab results, your understanding of disease processes, and your communication skills. For example, instead of saying "provided patient care," try "managed complex patient cohorts, ensuring adherence to treatment protocols and data collection." Emphasize any leadership roles or special projects you've undertaken. Each application needs to speak directly to the job description – it's a grind, but it's how you get noticed. Networking is Non-Negotiable: This industry often operates on connections. Spend time on LinkedIn, find people in roles that interest you, and politely ask for an informational interview. I was surprised by how many people were willing to share their journey and insights. Attending virtual conferences or webinars related to biotech and pharma can also open doors and help you understand the landscape better. It’s about building relationships, learning, and showing your genuine interest. Remember that feeling of accomplishment at graduation? Landing your first informational interview can be a similar small victory! Interviewing for Biotech Roles: Be prepared for different types of questions. They'll want to know about your understanding of drug development, clinical trial phases, and regulatory processes. Show them how your clinical experience gives you a unique edge in understanding the patient perspective, which is crucial for developing new therapies. Be ready to talk about a time you solved a complex problem or adapted to a new situation. It's about demonstrating your ability to learn, grow, and apply your clinical foundation to new challenges. Making this career change has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and ultimately, finding a path that truly aligns with your goals for flexibility and intellectual challenge. If you're feeling burned out and contemplating a similar leap, know that it's absolutely possible. Take that first step to explore your options, and never settle for less than what you deserve!
