Potty Training

You can’t teach a child to respond to body signals they don’t recognize yet.

That was one of the biggest lessons I learned while potty training OJ.

For many autistic children, the challenge isn’t stubbornness or laziness. Sometimes, the brain isn’t recognizing the body’s signals yet.

That’s why one of the biggest focuses of my potty training framework is building interoception while creating wetness discomfort. Once you understand why your child is struggling, you can choose strategies that actually match their needs.

... Read morePotty training children on the autism spectrum presents unique challenges that require patience and personalized strategies. One of the key realizations is that some autistic children may not yet recognize internal body signals like the need to urinate or defecate, which can make traditional potty training techniques ineffective. Developing interoception—the awareness of internal bodily sensations—is a crucial step in the training process. Creating a gentle awareness of wetness or discomfort helps children connect these sensations with the appropriate response. This approach moves away from viewing resistance as stubbornness, instead focusing on neurological and sensory differences. In practice, reinforcing this connection can involve consistent routines, positive reinforcement, and sensory-based cues that make bodily signals more noticeable. For example, timed bathroom visits paired with verbal reminders and gentle explanations can help establish predictability and reduce anxiety. From personal experience, incorporating visual schedules and social stories has also been beneficial. These tools help children anticipate and understand the potty routine, making the abstract concept of internal bodily signals more concrete. Moreover, celebrating small successes without pressure fosters a supportive environment that encourages progress. It’s also important to maintain communication with caregivers and specialists to adapt strategies as needed. Each child’s sensory profile and cognitive processing are unique, so flexibility and attentiveness to their responses are key. Overall, potty training an autistic child is a journey that combines understanding, empathy, and specialized methods. By focusing on interoception and creating awareness through gentle discomfort, parents and caregivers can build a foundation for successful independence in this essential life skill.
