Did you know… skin exfoliating edition

2025/1/26 Edited to

... Read moreHey skincare fam! I wanted to dive deeper into something that totally transformed my skin, and as a licensed esthetician, I see its power firsthand every day: exfoliation! You might have heard about it, but do you truly know why it's such a game-changer for getting that fresh, youthful glow? Our skin is amazing – it naturally exfoliates itself! When we're in our 20s, our skin cells turn over pretty quickly, usually every 28 to 30 days. That's why you often hear about that '28-day cycle.' But here's the kicker: as we get older, this process slows down significantly. By our 30s, that cycle can stretch to 30 to 35 days, and as we age further, that number gets slower and slower. This means dead skin cells linger on the surface for longer, leading to dullness, rough texture, and even clogged pores. That's where regular exfoliation comes in, and trust me, it's a non-negotiable step in my routine! Here are the incredible benefits I've seen and recommend to my clients: Reveals Brighter, More Radiant Skin: The most immediate and noticeable benefit! By gently sweeping away those dull, dead skin cells, you uncover the fresh, vibrant skin underneath. It instantly gives your complexion a boost, making it look much more lively and healthy. Improves Product Absorption: Ever feel like your expensive serums and moisturizers aren't really doing their job? When there's a layer of dead skin, your products can't penetrate effectively. Exfoliation clears the path, allowing your skincare heroes to sink in deeper and work their magic more efficiently. You'll get more bang for your buck! Smooths Skin Texture: If you struggle with rough patches or uneven skin, exfoliation is your best friend. It buffs away irregularities, leaving your skin feeling incredibly soft and smooth to the touch. This also creates a much better canvas for makeup! Helps Prevent Breakouts: Dead skin cells, oil, and debris can easily clog pores, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne. Regular exfoliation helps keep pores clear, significantly reducing the chances of those pesky breakouts. Boosts Cell Turnover and Fights Signs of Aging: This is where the magic really happens for keeping your skin looking fresh and youthful. By stimulating the shedding of old cells, you encourage the production of new ones. Certain exfoliants, like AHAs and retinols (even Retin-A if prescribed!), can also help stimulate collagen production over time, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin firmness. This 'speed up that cell turnover rate' is exactly what we want! So, how often should you exfoliate? As a licensed esthetician, I typically recommend exfoliating your skin one to two times a week. It's about finding that sweet spot – enough to reap the benefits without over-exfoliating, which can lead to irritation. When it comes to what to use, you have options! Chemical exfoliants like AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) are great for surface brightening and evening skin tone, while BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) are fantastic for oily or acne-prone skin as they can penetrate deeper into pores. And of course, retinols are powerful for accelerating cell renewal and tackling anti-aging concerns. Finding the right type for your skin is key, but the benefits of consistent, gentle exfoliation are undeniable for a truly fresh and youthful complexion!

Strawberry legs (aka keratosis pilaris) is caused by build-up of keratin in the skin. This is a hard protein that is perfectly normal within the skin. But too much can block the hair follicles. Dry and humid weather can make it worse so here’s how we’re taking care of it as summer approaches!
