Safety in the Studio

Hey fellow creatives! I wanted to dive a bit deeper into sandblasting safety, especially since I just dealt with a super rusty metal sculpture in my studio. When you're working with a sandblaster, it's not just about avoiding tetanus from rust – there are some serious health risks if you're not properly protected. I learned this the hard way, so I want to share my expanded list of safety precautions to keep you and your art space safe. First off, let's talk about what you're actually protecting yourself from. Beyond rust, sandblasting creates a lot of fine dust particles, which can include silica if you're using certain media. Inhaling these can cause serious lung issues over time, so a proper respirator isn't just a suggestion, it's a non-negotiable. I personally use a P100 particulate respirator – it filters out 99.97% of airborne particles, which is much better than a standard N95 for this kind of work. Make sure it has a good seal on your face! Eye and face protection are equally vital. Those tiny sand particles can fly everywhere. While safety glasses are a start, I always go for a full face shield over them. It protects your entire face from abrasions and rebound media. And don't forget your ears! The noise from a sandblaster can be surprisingly loud and damaging to your hearing over time, so earplugs or earmuffs are a must in my studio. Gloves, like I mentioned in my main post, are essential. You need heavy-duty, gauntlet-style gloves that protect your hands and forearms from the abrasive media and any sharp edges on your workpiece. I've had a few close calls, and good gloves have saved me from scrapes and worse. Beyond personal protective equipment, the environment in your studio is key. Good ventilation is an absolute game-changer. I have a dedicated exhaust fan that pulls air out of my sandblasting area, making sure those harmful dusts don't just hang around. If possible, a sandblasting cabinet with its own filtration system is ideal. Also, make sure your work area is well-lit so you can clearly see what you're doing, and keep the floor clear to avoid tripping hazards. After the blasting is done, the cleanup process needs to be safe too. Don't just sweep up the dust dry, as that will simply stir it back into the air. I use a shop vac with a HEPA filter to safely collect all the spent media and dust. And always keep your PPE on until the cleanup is complete. Remember, safety isn't just about following rules; it's about making sure you can keep creating without risking your health. Taking a few extra minutes for proper setup and protection means many more years of making amazing art in your studio!
