I’m doing everything I can to put myself out there as a makeup artist and I keep falling on my rear. My grandmother doesn’t believe that I can make this my full-time income right now and maybe she’s right. But my gut says that this is my calling and as much advice as I want to take from friends and family none of them know what it’s like to own and run a business. I’m taking a lot of “embarrassing” things to put myself out there and make money for myself. I’m not sure where I’ll end up, but I know one thing. Failure is not an option.

... Read moreYou know that feeling of putting your whole heart into something and still hitting brick walls? That's exactly where I've been with my dream of becoming a full-time makeup artist. It's easy for people to tell you to follow your passion, but turning that passion into a profession, especially as an entrepreneur, is a whole different ball game. I've heard the doubts, the well-meaning concerns about financial stability, and even the subtle suggestions that maybe I should stick to something 'safer.' And honestly, sometimes those voices get loud, even my own!
But here’s the thing: every successful entrepreneur started somewhere. For me, that meant doing things that felt a little 'embarrassing' at first, but were absolutely crucial. Think about it – how do you build a portfolio from scratch? You offer free makeovers to friends, family, or even strangers willing to let you experiment. You spend hours practicing, refining techniques, and then you have to put yourself out there on social media, constantly creating content, even when you feel like no one is watching. It’s not just about the artistry; it’s about becoming your own marketing team, your own accountant, and your own biggest cheerleader.
One of the biggest hurdles is overcoming that initial fear of judgment or the feeling that you're not good enough. I've learned that you have to embrace every opportunity, no matter how small. That first paid gig, even if it's just for a small event, feels like a massive victory. It’s all about building momentum and proving to yourself, and eventually to others, that this isn't just a hobby. It’s a viable makeup artist business.
The journey from a passion hobby to a full-time income requires relentless determination. There will be days when bookings are slow, when a client isn't completely thrilled, or when you feel overwhelmed by the business side of things. Those are the moments when you have to dig deep and remember why you started. For me, it's the joy of transforming someone's look and seeing their confidence shine. That's the fuel that keeps me going.
So, if you're out there, an aspiring entrepreneur with a passion you want to turn into a profession, know that you're not alone in these struggles. Keep learning, keep practicing, and most importantly, keep putting yourself out there. Don't let anyone, including your own inner critic, tell you your dream isn't possible. This journey is messy, it's challenging, but with enough grit, that dream of a full-time makeup artist career can absolutely become a reality. Because for us, truly, failure is not an option.
