Living on Vancouver Island brings a unique set of challenges, especially when it comes to travel and everyday conveniences. One major hurdle many island residents face is the limited transportation options. The seaplane is the fastest way to reach Vancouver—taking just 35 minutes—but it can cost several hundred dollars, which isn’t always affordable for frequent trips. Most of the time, we rely on the ferry, which takes about an hour and a half to cross. Add to that the driving time to and from terminals, and each trip can take up a significant part of the day. This makes appointments or errands on the mainland, like visa applications, quite the commitment. Recently, we had to make a second trip to Vancouver just to apply for a Korean visa. The process itself was stressful—not only due to the travel time and expense but also the uncertainty of visa approval. After submitting the documents, there’s also the wait time to pick up the passport, meaning yet another trip back. This constant need to travel can make island life feel a bit inconvenient at times. But despite these hassles, island living has its charms. The tranquil environment, beautiful scenery, and tight-knit communities offer a lifestyle different from city living. For those considering a move here, it's important to weigh the quiet joys against the travel challenges. Planning ahead and budgeting for these trips can help mitigate some of the inconvenience. Overall, my experience highlights how living on an island can be fulfilling yet requires patience and careful planning—especially when dealing with essential tasks like visa applications or other mainland appointments.
