Ghana to the whole world!🇬🇭
My first time seeing the name change of Toronto’s major downtown area ‘Sankofa Square’ 🇨🇦
Sankofa: a twi word meaning “go back and get it.” They changed the name to this to encourage us to learn from the past, to better our future ✨
The recent renaming of Toronto’s major downtown area to Sankofa Square highlights a meaningful cultural connection between Canada and Ghana. The term Sankofa, originating from the Twi language spoken in Ghana, translates to “go back and get it,” symbolizing the importance of learning from history to move forward positively. This change reflects a growing recognition of the African diaspora’s influence and contributions within Toronto’s diverse urban landscape. Sankofa is often represented symbolically by a bird with its head turned backward, taking an egg off its back. This imagery teaches that knowledge from the past is invaluable and should be retrieved to nurture future growth. Renaming such a prominent location in downtown Toronto underscores the city’s commitment to inclusivity and acknowledgment of cultural histories. The new Sankofa Square sits near the historic Dundas Square, which remains a central hub for public events, arts, and commerce. By renaming this area, Toronto encourages its residents and visitors alike to reflect on the lessons of history, including the journeys, challenges, and triumphs of Black communities globally and locally. This change inspires ongoing dialogue about heritage and identity, emphasizing that progress is deeply tied to honoring and understanding one’s roots. It also fosters community pride among Toronto’s Ghanaian and wider African communities, strengthening cultural ties. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Sankofa Square serves as a reminder to appreciate history’s lessons and use that wisdom to build a more equitable and vibrant future in the heart of downtown Toronto.
