The person who lives it, is much more knowledgeable then the person who studies it

... Read moreFrom my experience engaging with African-American Vernacular English (AAVE), I have come to deeply appreciate the distinction between lived experience and academic study that the original article touches on. AAVE is more than just a dialect; it's a vibrant cultural expression shaped by the history and daily realities of the Black community. Scholars like John R. Rickford underscore that AAVE is systematic and rule-governed, which challenges common misconceptions that it’s simply incorrect or informal English. In many institutional settings, there exists what the article calls "worship of the written word," where only formally documented and academically endorsed knowledge is given legitimacy. This attitude can marginalize communities whose primary knowledge transmission happens through oral histories, storytelling, and lived experience instead of formal writing. I've noticed this particularly in educational and corporate environments where language proficiency is often measured by adherence to standardized writing and citation norms, inadvertently discounting voices from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The phrase "touch me and see what happens," mentioned in the article’s OCR content and queried in relation to AAVE, illustrates how some expressions embedded within Black culture might not have footnotes or widely recognized academic histories, yet they carry profound communal meanings and histories. For those within the Black community, such phrases resonate deeply because they emerge organically within cultural contexts and shared experiences rather than formal scholarship. Moreover, the struggle to have AAVE recognized as a legitimate dialect reflects broader issues of racial and cultural equity. Recognition by the Oakland school board, as mentioned, not only validated AAVE linguistically but also empowered educators to respect the linguistic backgrounds of their students rather than dismiss them. This acknowledgment helps bridge gaps in educational success and fosters greater respect for Black identity and culture. In my personal interactions and observations, embracing both lived experience and academic knowledge enriches our understanding of language. However, when written or formal documentation is elevated at the expense of oral and communal knowledge, it risks perpetuating systemic biases and white supremacy culture as described. A balanced approach that honors the value of spoken traditions alongside scholarly research can lead to more inclusive and effective communication and education for marginalized communities. Ultimately, lived experience offers indispensable insights that can’t always be captured by traditional academic routes. To truly understand and appreciate AAVE and the cultures it represents, we need to listen closely to those who live it every day, recognizing their knowledge as valid and vital.
