How to load suture
Loading a suture correctly is a foundational skill for any surgical technologist, directly impacting the efficiency and safety of surgical procedures. Based on my experience in the OR, the process begins with selecting the appropriate needle holder matched to the suture needle size and type. Holding the needle at about two-thirds from the swaged end minimizes the risk of needle damage or slippage during suturing. Before loading, ensure your hands and instruments are sterile to maintain aseptic technique. When positioning the needle in the needle holder, align it perpendicular to the jaws to prevent unnecessary pressure that can bend or damage the needle. Avoid gripping the needle too close to the tip, as this limits needle control and may increase tissue trauma. In addition to these steps, itâs beneficial to familiarize yourself with various suture materials and needles, since different surgeries may require absorbable or non-absorbable sutures, curved or straight needles. Practicing loading sutures in simulated environments or during supervised surgical cases helps build confidence and precision. Lastly, always communicate with the surgical team to anticipate suture needs and prepare instrument setups accordingly. Continuous learning and attentiveness to these details enhance surgical outcomes and professional proficiency as a surgical technologist.
