How Gen X Kids Were Raised!

2025/1/12 Edited to

... Read moreBeing a Gen X parent is truly a unique experience. Many of us grew up in an era defined by latchkey kids, independence, and a healthy dose of economic uncertainty. This 'BACK IN MY DAY' mentality wasn't just a phase; it forged a core sense of practicality and resourcefulness that I believe is deeply ingrained in how we approach PARENTING today. Now, as we navigate raising Generation Alpha, the contrast can sometimes feel stark. I often find myself thinking about how different my childhood was from my kids'. We learned to entertain ourselves, fix things that broke (or at least try!), and understood the value of a dollar because things weren't always readily available. That shaping experience, living through periods of economic flux, taught us to be adaptable and to make do with what we had. This isn't about nostalgia for harder times; it's about recognizing the resilience it built within us, a trait I desperately want to pass on to my own children. So, how does this translate to raising Gen Alpha? For me, it means consciously fostering that same practicality. It's about encouraging problem-solving rather than immediately providing solutions. It's about teaching them to value experiences over endless material possessions, and understanding that hard work often precedes reward. When something breaks, my first instinct isn't always to replace it, but to see if we can fix it together. This ‘GenXForLife!’ attitude means we're not just buying gadgets; we're teaching them how things work and how to maintain them. There’s a common question I hear – and sometimes ask myself – 'ARE WE TOO SOFT NOW?' It’s easy to look at the differences in upbringing and wonder if we're coddling our kids compared to how we were raised. But I believe it's about striking a balance. We want our children to feel loved and secure, but also to develop the grit and self-reliance that will serve them well in an ever-changing world. This means letting them experience natural consequences, giving them responsibilities, and allowing them to fail and learn from it, just like we did. Ultimately, my goal as a Gen X parent is to equip my Gen Alpha kids with the traits that helped my generation thrive: adaptability, independent thinking, and a deep appreciation for resourcefulness. It’s not about recreating my childhood, but about selectively imparting the lessons learned from it to prepare them for their future. We might have grown up without smartphones, but the core competencies we gained are timeless, and I believe they’re the best inheritance we can give our kids.

The easiest raised garden beds
The easiest (and cheapest) large garden beds I’ve made. For one garden bed you will need: -2 10x2x12 boards - 8 concrete retaining wall blocks That’s it. I cut the boards into 8 foot pieces which left me with 2 4 foot pieces for the width. Lined them up In the concrete blocks and voila.
