Heavy Snow Thatched Village
Miyama Kayabuki no Sato is a village in Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, which has been selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. 39 of the 50 houses are private houses with thatched roofs, and it is known as a place where the original scenery of Japan remains.
What to see
Landscape of Thatched Village: The scenery of thatched houses that are 150 to 200 years old is a masterpiece. Because the residents are actually living, you can feel the traditional way of life.
Miyama Folklore Museum: This is a museum that reconstructed and used a farmhouse house about 200 years ago. You can learn about the life of a farmhouse at that time and the structure of a thatched roof. Admission is 300 yen for adults and free for elementary and junior high school students.
Seasonal events:
Water cannon inspection: In spring and autumn (usually in May and December), water cannon inspections are carried out to protect cultural properties from fire, and it is spectacular to see many water cannon spewing water all at once.
Winter Lantern: This event is held every winter, and houses with thatched roofs are lit up in a snowscape, creating a magical landscape.

私が初めて美山かやぶきの里を訪れたのは、真冬の大雪の日でした。新雪が屋根の茅葺きを美しく包み込み、まるで昔話の世界に迷い込んだかのような感覚にとらわれました。雪が積もることで風景が一変し、静けさと厳粛さが漂うこの場所は、他の季節には味わえない独特の魅力がありました。 集落内を歩くと、雪の重みで屋根がしっかりと守られていることを実感できます。雪の重さに耐えつつ、茅葺きが家屋の断熱材としても機能しているのが感じられ、伝統的な工法の素晴らしさを実感しました。訪問時には積雪の影響で足元が滑りやすかったため、防水性のある靴と滑り止めを用意しておくことをおすすめします。 また、春と秋に行われる一斉放水点検では、火災予防のため多くの放水銃が一斉に放水される光景が見られますが、冬の雪景色の中でも、この地域の伝統的な暮らしを守ろうとする姿勢を強く感じられました。冬灯廊ではライトアップが茅葺きの屋根に映え、雪と光が織りなす幻想的な風景に心を奪われました。 大雪の際は交通アクセスが難しくなるため、訪問の際は事前に天候と交通情報を確認するのが良いでしょう。私自身、帰りに靴下がびちゃびちゃになった失敗もありましたが、それも含めて思い出深い旅の一部となりました。美山かやぶきの里は、四季折々の顔を持ちますが、雪景色の時期は特に訪れる価値が高いと感じています。
