Journey from a Seizure at 16 to 2 Master’s Degrees

Today is 1 in 26 Day, and I’m sharing my story to bring light to a condition that often stays in the shadows.

How it Started 📖

At 16, I was a typical teenager sitting at home, working on a homework assignment and studying for my learner’s permit test. In an instant, a seizure changed everything. I remember the overwhelming fear that I’d never be able to dance again, go to college, or ever experience the independence of driving.

The Reality of the "Invisible" Struggle ⛈️

Living with Epilepsy isn't just about the seizures you see; it’s about the:

• Constant Vigilance: Taking multiple medications daily and always carrying rescue meds.

• Emotional Toll: The anxiety, embarrassment, and loneliness that come with a diagnosis people don't always understand.

• Difficult Milestones: Having seizures in college dorms and, recently, experiencing a new type of seizure at work that went completely unnoticed. Because of this, I’ve had to stop driving once again.

Finding My Strength & Purpose 💪

Despite needing significant accommodations, I refused to let my diagnosis define my potential. I am proud to say I’ve earned my Bachelor’s degree and two Master’s degrees. While I now work from home for my safety, I’ve dedicated my life to advocacy:

• Volunteer: Camp counselor at Camp EAGR since 2017.

• Advocate: Epilepsy Awareness Ambassador and mentor for others living with the condition.

• Educator: I created a "Seizure Safe Schools" professional development training as my grad school project.

• Support: I’m Seizure First Aid certified, attend support groups, and walk every year at the Walk to End Epilepsy.

💡 Epilepsy Fact

1 in 26 people will develop Epilepsy at some point in their lifetime. It is a diverse neurological condition that requires more than just "awareness"—it requires action.

📣 Call to Action

Please take the time to become Seizure First Aid certified. Knowing how to properly assist someone during a seizure can literally save a life.

Let's end the stigma together. 💜

... Read moreLiving with epilepsy involves much more than coping with seizures; it requires navigating a complex landscape of physical, emotional, and social challenges. From my experience and conversations with others, the daily regimen of medications and vigilance can significantly impact lifestyle and mental health. This constant alertness is crucial as seizures can be unpredictable, even advanced types that sometimes go unnoticed, affecting day-to-day activities like driving or working safely. This invisible struggle also extends to the emotional realm, where many experience anxiety, isolation, and misunderstanding from others. Acknowledging these feelings is vital for healing and growth. Advocacy, such as participating in epilepsy awareness campaigns or becoming Seizure First Aid certified, provides not only personal empowerment but also helps educate the wider community. These efforts break down stigma and equip others to respond effectively during seizure emergencies, potentially saving lives. Higher education was a significant milestone in breaking the perceived limits imposed by epilepsy. With the right accommodations and a strong support system, achieving academic goals is possible, as seen in earning advanced degrees. Remote work options further enable those with medical vulnerabilities to maintain independence and career progression safely. In addition to personal achievements, volunteering as a camp counselor and creating professional development programs like "Seizure Safe Schools" contribute to a supportive environment for others with epilepsy. Connecting through support groups and participating in awareness walks fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. If you or someone you care about is affected by epilepsy, consider becoming Seizure First Aid certified. Understanding how to assist during a seizure can make a profound difference. Together, we can promote action beyond awareness, foster inclusive communities, and support individuals living with this condition every day.
