SPOILER FREE BOOK REVIEW: ONYX STORM

Definitely was a struggle to get through the first half of the book. A lot of plot was lost and some villains placed with nothing happening between them and the protagonist.

Action scenes were gorgeously written. Love scenes were immaculate. Will definitely reread but still not as good as Fourth Wing originally.

... Read more🛑 SPOILER WARNING: This section contains major plot details and revelations for Onyx Storm. Proceed with caution if you haven't read the book yet! 🛑 Okay, so I know my initial review was spoiler-free, but for those of you who've already devoured Onyx Storm or just need to know what goes down, let's talk about the juicy bits. The original review mentioned the first half feeling a bit slow and villains not doing much – and honestly, I felt that too before things exploded. But once you hit that halfway mark, Rebecca Yarros really starts to unleash the chaos she's known for! One of the biggest things that finally clicked for me was the escalating political intrigue. Remember how the original review mentioned "villains placed with nothing happening"? Well, that slow burn eventually led to some massive revelations about the true intentions of certain factions within the kingdom. I was genuinely shocked by the deep-seated betrayals and the unexpected shifts in power dynamics. It really showcased how deeply intertwined the magic and political power structures are, and seeing certain characters make surprising alliances or startling choices was a highlight. And the dragons! Oh my gosh. Christopher Paolini's praise from the OCR about "awesome dragons" really rings true when you get into the thick of it. We get to see so much more of their unique magics and personalities. There are some intense moments where dragon abilities are pushed to their limits, and their bonds with their riders are truly tested. The scene where a massive, unexpected dragon battle erupted was absolutely breathtaking, and it truly made me understand why the action scenes were called "gorgeously written" in the initial review. The scale and intensity of those moments were just incredible. Now, about the "love scenes were immaculate" part. Without giving away too much for those skimming, let's just say the emotional stakes for the main couple were dialed up to eleven. Their bond is tested in ways I didn't see coming, especially with the constant threats from both within and outside their ranks. I was on the edge of my seat wondering if they'd truly make it through some of the trials they faced. The vulnerability and passion were definitely there, making those intimate moments all the more impactful amidst the chaos. Compared to Fourth Wing, I think Onyx Storm really dives deeper into the complexities of the magic system and the ancient history of their world. While Fourth Wing set the stage with exciting revelations, Onyx Storm feels like it’s peeling back even more layers, showing us the uglier truths behind the war. My biggest surprise was probably the discovery of a hidden ancient power source that completely shifted my perspective on everything that came before. Overall, while the pacing in the first half might have been a bit of a slog, the payoff in the latter half, with all its revelations and heart-stopping moments, made it a truly memorable read. For anyone who felt the initial review was too vague, I hope this little peek behind the curtain gives you a better sense of the major events and why this book sparked so much discussion!
