spend a lot of my time studying moths their wings, patterns, quiet presence, and the way they exist without asking to be noticed.
Somewhere along the way, that observation turned into design.
These dresses are inspired by moths I’ve encountered through my research their textures, symmetry, softness, and resilience. What began as sketches slowly became silhouettes, and eventually, wearable pieces. Later, AI entered the process, helping me explore shapes and ideas I couldn’t visualize alone.
This isn’t just fashion for me.
It’s memory, science, curiosity, and creativity woven together.
I wrote a longer piece on Medium about this journey, from fieldwork to fabric, if you’d like to read more 🌿
... Read moreDelving deeper into the fascinating world of moth-inspired fashion, I've found that each species of moth—from the delicate Actias luna to the striking Glyphodes bicolor—influences design elements in unique ways. The subtle symmetry and soft textures of moth wings, often overlooked, provide endless inspiration for creative silhouettes and fabric choices.
What truly excites me is how the quiet presence of moths reflects a delicate balance between resilience and vulnerability. Their muted colors and intricate patterns challenge traditional fashion norms focused on boldness by emphasizing subtlety and poetic grace. In my experience, this approach encourages appreciation for understated beauty, aligning fashion more closely with natural elements and scientific observation.
Incorporating AI into the design process opened new horizons for visualizing shapes and textures beyond initial sketches. This collaboration between human creativity and machine learning has led to innovative patterns that mimic the complex layering of moth wings, offering garments that feel alive with nature's nuances.
The journey from field observations of species like Endotricha sp and Ischyja manlia to wearable art teaches us invaluable lessons in patience and respect for the environment. This process reminds me that fashion can be more than aesthetics—it can be a form of storytelling connecting us to biodiversity and the subtle wonders of the moth world.
For those passionate about sustainable and meaningful fashion, exploring moth-inspired designs offers a path rich with scientific curiosity and creativity. It's a blend of memory, nature, and technology that invites us to see fashion as an intimate dialogue with the natural world, where every dress tells a story shaped by wings that flutter quietly, yet inspire loudly.
