My kids won’t remember my advice. They’ll remember if their mum settled or not.

We were raised to chase stable. Nobody mentioned that stable can feel a lot like stuck.

Study hard. Get the good job. Be grateful for the iron rice bowl. We heard it our whole lives lah.

And it’s not wrong. Stability kept a roof over us. But somewhere between the 9-to-6, the commute, the 14 days of leave I rationed like gold. I started to wonder what I was actually grateful FOR.

Grateful to see my kids for one tired hour before bed?

Grateful to feel needed everywhere except the place I actually wanted to be?

I’m not anti-job. I’m anti-disappearing inside one.

Stable should feel safe. Not heavy. And if “stable” has quietly started to feel like a cage with good aircon, you’re not ungrateful. You’re awake.

Save this if “stable” has started to feel heavier than safe. 🤍

... Read moreGrowing up in an environment where the Asian education system emphasizes 'stable jobs' as the safest path, I can deeply relate to the conflict between societal expectations and personal fulfillment. From my own experience, chasing stability felt like chasing a shadow that grew heavier with time. The so-called 'iron rice bowl' promised security but often came with hidden costs—lost time with family, dwindling energy, and a sense of disappearing within a role that demanded everything yet gave little back. I remember counting down my precious 14 days of leave like gold just to steal moments with my children, often at the tail end of a long day. It was then I realized I wasn’t truly grateful for the stability—I was merely grateful that it kept a roof over our heads. What I longed for was feeling truly present and needed where it mattered most: at home, with my kids. This awakening fueled my journey into entrepreneurship. It was scary stepping out of the 'safe' 9-to-6 into a realm where nothing was guaranteed. Yet, every challenge was a reminder that stable should feel safe, not suffocating. What many don’t realize is that settling doesn’t just affect your happiness—it subtly conveys lessons to your children. They won’t remember the advice you gave but will remember if their mom settled for less or pursued a life that inspired. For moms contemplating this path, I say: acknowledge the weight of stability when it no longer serves you. It’s okay to want more. Balancing entrepreneurship and motherhood is tough but empowering. Building a business around your values allows you to reclaim your time and presence. It’s about creating a new kind of stability—one that feels like freedom, not a cage. If the traditional definition of success feels like a shackle, maybe it’s time to redefine it on your terms. That’s the legacy worth passing on.
