Tree to Bowl
A big old cherry tree fell during a winter storm. Rather than taking it away to a landfill or cut up for firewood, the wood from the tree will be used to make other useful items. Boards, wood kitchen utensils, bowls plates, etc. Today I’m making several bowls from the large trunk section. This one section of trunk yielded 4 16” salad bowls, 4 smaller 6” bowls. The left over center slab will be used for carving utensils after the wood dries more.
Repurposing wood from a fallen tree not only prevents waste but also offers a fulfilling woodworking experience. Starting with a large trunk section, each cut blank allows for creating unique wooden bowls that highlight the natural grain and beauty of cherry wood. Using a lathe to shape the outside before hollowing the interior ensures a balanced, functional piece. Sanding smooth and finishing the bowls with a mix of food-grade oil and beeswax results in a durable surface safe for salad and serving bowls. In my own woodworking projects, I’ve found that patience during the drying phase is key—especially for carving utensils from center slabs, which requires fully seasoned wood to avoid cracking. Additionally, using the center-finding method on the halved trunk ensures symmetrical, well-centered blanks for turning. This approach transforms what would have been discarded wood into cherished kitchen items with character and story. Such projects also deepen appreciation for sustainable crafts: instead of landfill or firewood, turning downed trees into lasting pieces of art connects you with nature’s cycle.
