College is a SCAM!

After graduating with a degree in Geospatial Sciences, I quickly realized that education was only part of the equation for career success. Despite what many believe, having a diploma is not an automatic ticket to high-paying or fulfilling jobs. Employers increasingly prioritize practical experience and demonstrated skills over academic credentials alone. In highly specialized fields like planning and zoning, a degree helps, but on-the-job training and relevant experience are what truly set candidates apart. For example, my first professional role involved substantial learning from a land use attorney, which proved more valuable than the coursework alone. Later, when applying for positions in a new state, it was my prior zoning experience that impressed employers more than my degree. I also learned that the college experience demands intense self-accountability, which isn’t easy for everyone. While academic qualifications remain important for some professions, many sectors open doors through internships, apprenticeships, or work experience, sometimes even bypassing formal post-secondary education. If you’re considering college, it’s crucial to research your intended field carefully. Ask yourself: Does this career require a degree, or are there alternative routes? Can you gain experience while studying? Are entry-level positions accessible without formal education? This approach can prevent the discouragement of facing job postings requiring years of experience for entry roles. Ultimately, success in today’s job market often comes down to building a strong portfolio, networking, and gaining hands-on experience. Whether you go to college or start working earlier, focus on developing relevant skills and connections that align with your career goals. The traditional belief that a degree equals guaranteed success is outdated—your path should be strategic and based on the realities of your chosen industry.
