... Read moreHave you ever wondered how much of what you perceive is actually real versus how much your brain fabricates to keep your experience seamless? Through personal observation and research, I've learned that our brain acts like a behind-the-scenes editor, continuously shaping what we consciously experience. For instance, think about your own nose — it’s literally always in front of your eyes, yet you barely notice it. That’s because your brain has deemed it unimportant and filters it out, sparing your attention for more relevant stimuli. This selective focus extends to sounds as well. Background noises like fans, air conditioners, or the hum of distant traffic tend to fade into oblivion because your brain stops reporting repetitive sounds that don’t require your action. Peripheral vision is another fascinating example. Although we feel like we see everything around us clearly, the reality is that much of what we think we see peripheral-wise is actually a best guess by the brain. When the visual input is unclear, the brain fills in gaps using memories and pattern recognition, creating an illusion of continuous clarity. Similarly, each eye has a natural blind spot with no light receptors. Instead of leaving a blank space, your brain cleverly fills that spot with surrounding details so you never notice the gap. Experiences like these highlight how the brain removes, edits, and reconstructs sensory input, making the world appear stable and complete when it’s actually a highly curated version. From my perspective, understanding these mechanisms has deepened my appreciation for the complexity of human perception and mental health. Recognizing that our mind constantly edits reality can also help us become more mindful about how we experience the world and challenge what we assume to be true at face value. It reminds me that perception is not always a direct reflection but a meaningful interpretation shaped by both physiology and psychology.
