You don’t need the right words

Confession: some of the most helpful journal entries I’ve ever written are… objectively terrible. 😂

We’re talking grocery lists mixed with feelings. Random song lyrics. Three pages that just say, “I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M CRYING.” One very dramatic doodle of a cloud. Zero Pulitzer Prize potential.

And you know what? They still did the job.

Your journal isn’t grading your grammar, handing out participation trophies, or asking for a tidy beginning, middle, and end. It’s just giving your brain somewhere else to put all the tabs it has open.

Think of it like cleaning out your junk drawer. You don’t organize every paperclip before you empty the drawer. You dump it out first. Then you figure out what stays.

Journaling works the same way.

So if you’ve been waiting until you know exactly what to say… consider this your permission slip to write the messy version. Your notebook has seen worse. 😉

... Read moreFrom personal experience, I’ve found that the true power of journaling lies not in producing polished entries but simply in the act of showing up with whatever’s on your mind. There have been days when my journal contained nothing but random song lyrics or frustrated scribbles, yet these entries served as a crucial outlet during overwhelming moments. The images in this article perfectly capture how journaling offers a quiet, nonjudgmental space when words fail us. Anxiety, racing thoughts, and heavy emotions often don’t have clear language, but putting down fragments, half-sentences, or even doodles can soften the mental load. I’ve also noticed that journaling can act like emptying a cluttered junk drawer—you start by dumping all the chaos out, without worrying about order or coherence. Later, patterns emerge and insights come naturally. If you’re hesitant to journal because you feel the need to 'get it right,' take comfort in knowing that the messy, imperfect entries count just as much as the carefully crafted ones. The real benefit is in the process of unloading mental noise, creating space for reflection, and gradually making sense of your emotions. So, whether you write complete sentences or chaotic scribbles, just open your notebook and start. Your journal doesn’t expect clarity or coherence—it simply holds your story, however messy it may be.

You don’t have to have the right words to start
Grief makes you think you have to say it perfectly. You don’t. You just need somewhere for it to go. If you don’t give it space, it stays in your body and shows up in ways you don’t expect. Journaling lets it land. Not polished. Not pretty. Just honest enough. Start small.
