Directing the economy in their favour

... Read moreIn recent years, the global economic landscape has become increasingly complex, influenced not only by financial factors but also by geopolitical tensions and rapid technological changes. From my own observation, the concept of directing the economy in favor of particular interests often intertwines with broader global risks such as inflation spikes, debt accumulation, and market volatility—all of which can undermine economic stability. One striking insight from the Global Risks Report 2026 is the concept of "geoeconomic confrontation" emerging as a dominant threat. This involves countries leveraging economic policies as strategic tools, often leading to trade restrictions, sanctions, or currency manipulation. Such tactics, while aimed at securing national advantages, can ripple through global markets, resulting in unpredictability and increased risk for investors and consumers alike. Furthermore, the report highlights growing concerns over asset bubbles, which historically precede economic downturns. Witnessing previous economic cycles, it's clear that unchecked market exuberance fueled by cheap credit and speculative investments can lead to sudden corrections harmful to economies worldwide. Another aspect worth noting is the erosion of global cooperation frameworks. Effective multilateral institutions have traditionally played a key role in managing cross-border economic issues, but their current deadlock limits coordinated responses to shared challenges. This erosion complicates efforts to address systemic risks and fosters economic fragmentation. Adding to that, inequality remains a critical interlinked risk. As the social contract strains under economic pressures, disparities in wealth and opportunities can exacerbate societal tensions, influencing political instability and economic policy directions. From a practical standpoint, these insights suggest the need for diversified strategies to build resilience. Governments and businesses must prioritize adaptive frameworks that acknowledge these interconnected risks. This could include promoting transparent economic policies, investing in sustainable infrastructure, and fostering innovation responsibly—especially in areas influenced by AI and other technologies driving "technological acceleration." In my experience, staying informed about these evolving risk domains and encouraging dialogue between stakeholders at all levels can help mitigate adverse outcomes. It is essential to balance national interests with collective global goals to navigate this increasingly turbulent economic era successfully.
