The Yukon

Hiking along the M’Clintock River in the Yukon offers a truly immersive experience in one of Canada’s last great wild places. The 9.2-mile trail is a perfect length for a day hike or a longer adventure if you take your time to savor the surroundings. What I find unique about this stretch is the complete absence of human development — just pure wilderness that keeps you alert and excited for any surprises nature may reveal. If you’re traveling with a dog, this trail is a fantastic choice. The Yukon’s expansive forests and riverbanks provide ample opportunities for your furry companion to explore safely. Remember, however, to keep your dog under control as the area is home to diverse wildlife including moose and possibly bears. Carrying bear spray and being vigilant is essential to a safe and enjoyable hike. Weather in the Yukon can be unpredictable, so layering your clothing and packing rain gear is a must. Also, bring plenty of water and some high-energy snacks to keep your energy up. The trail’s rugged terrain ranges from flat riverbanks to more challenging rocky paths, so comfortable hiking boots with good traction will make a big difference. While hiking this road less traveled, you may also spot migratory birds, wildflowers, and curious wildlife along the M’Clintock River. Each season offers a different set of scenic delights—lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and a serene snowy wonderland in winter. It’s an outdoor adventure that truly prepares you to expect the unexpected.
